Plagiarism is bad, kids. Not to mention stupid when you do it online.

Heads up, Housefic writers: [livejournal.com profile] awwsugah has been reposting other people's stories on her MySpace and passing them off as her own. She's got stuff by [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl, [livejournal.com profile] cryptictac, [livejournal.com profile] maineac, [livejournal.com profile] isagel, [livejournal.com profile] soundship, [livejournal.com profile] evila_elf, [livejournal.com profile] genagirl, [livejournal.com profile] jaryn_, [livejournal.com profile] elynittria, [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller, and others. (Not me, though. I guess my stuff isn't good enough. Heh.) See cryptictac's post for an in-progress roundup.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] thewlisian_afer for the alert.

W, why WOULD YOU DO THAT? D:

I've never really read [livejournal.com profile] assugah's works before, but I recognize her name from around and, if you're somewhat high profile, copying off fic-- FAMOUS fic-- is even dumber.

[identity profile] pwcorgigirl.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the heads-up. And I wonder if it wasn't noticed sooner because anyone would go blind in a hurry reading in that layout? Still, jeeze. That's just astonishing.

Me neither, apparently. Hee!

In other news -- holy crap.

Ha. Yes, not too easy on the eyes -- although the blog's locked now, so not everyone will get to enjoy the view for themselves.

I was surprised not to see any of your work on there (unless I didn't recognize it), or Mer's or Nightdog's.

It is astonishing -- one wonders why, when she became involved in LJ fandom, she didn't delete those plagiarized posts. Nobody would have been the wiser.

[identity profile] bironic.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember when she first came on the LJ scene with a bunch of short, fluffy ficlets, and I think she's active in the RP community.

if you're somewhat high profile, copying off fic-- FAMOUS fic-- is even dumber

Honestly! As if plagiarizing weren't stupid enough, why do it to people in your own community? Or, if she posted those copied fics before she joined LJ fandom, why leave them up there? Gah.

[identity profile] bironic.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that about sums it up. It's just plain idiotic, not to mention rude, to plagiarize fics not only from people in your community but also from people you've friended and who have friended you back, as if someone isn't going to notice.

Me neither, apparently. Hee!

*g* See above comment to Corgigirl. Do you feel left out?

Ah, once again I'm proud to be uncool. ;)

I'm kinda curious as to what kind of comments she was getting. And how people feel upon getting comments based on stuff they plagiarized-- how could you feel good about that?! "Oh, they're complimenting something I didn't make. Golly gee, I'm so popular!"

PS: Is it sad that I'm not as "HEY WHY NOT ME" since you weren't plagiarized? XXD

[identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe when she came to lj and started making friends with the people she did this to that she didn't dump the evidence. Maybe she hoped if she pretended it hadn't happened, it would go away?

It's kind of shocking to be reminded that not only can this happen, it does.

[identity profile] deelaundry.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get plagiarized either. *sobs*

[identity profile] deelaundry.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
PS. Didn't Mer run across a plagiarist of her work a few months back? Could it have been awwsugah? Creepy.

Yes, she and [livejournal.com profile] firestorm717 had their work stolen and repackaged as a single (disjointed) story on an outside website by a young man who also had an LJ. I do not believe it was the same person, though.

There should be a club for people who never get plagiarized. What are we doing wrong???
ext_2047: (Default)

[identity profile] bironic.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I don't get why she didn't "dispose of the evidence" either (and asked her so in her response (awwsugah.livejournal.com/126858.html)). In her post, Awwsugah said she stopped blogging the stolen stories after she joined LJ fandom, but I also asked Cryptictac if she remembers the dates working out like that, because I'm very curious.

[identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really remember when I started seeing her around lj, but it seems like it was before some of the RPS she stole from [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal. This whole last year and a half is a total blur for me though timewise.

Her response makes me kind of sad. I'm sure we've all done things we later regretted. But that is such a HUGE thing. I will be interested to know how/if she replies to your question.

[identity profile] stephantom.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh, this is very, very weird. I mean, you hear about ridiculous fucktards on LJ all the time, but they're just anonymous fucktards. [livejournal.com profile] awwsugah and I have become pretty good friends in the past six months or so. So, uh, this is just bizzarre. Meh.

[identity profile] pun.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I feel so left out!

[identity profile] mer-duff.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it wasn't awwsugah - it was some delusional kid in the Prairies. He never did reply directly to my emails or acknowledge what he did, but he did eventually remove the material from the website once I posted a comment on his LJ. Not to excuse what awwsugah did, and perhaps it's just lip service, but at least she recognises that she did something seriously wrong.

So I guess technically I don't get to join the club, but can I be a member for this incident?

[identity profile] thewlisian-afer.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The answer, truly, I think: You're not being prolific enough.

Nudge nudge wink wink?

Leiascully got skipped over, too, though, and she puts out new stuff every week.

[identity profile] thewlisian-afer.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly Meg just doesn't like her characterization(s) as much, and has more than enough others to choose from. I dunno, who knows what's going on in her head.

Uhm. Thanks for the heads-up. I just found out about [livejournal.com profile] awwsugah's plagiarizing of [livejournal.com profile] cryptictac's work.

Small correction: Esse's (aka [livejournal.com profile] paradise_city story "A Love Restrained" was plagiarized, not mine. Either way, it still sucks. It appears [livejournal.com profile] awwsugah took older (2005-early 2006) House fics.

[identity profile] namasteyoga.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe we can get icons for our fics that say: "Rated not theft worthy by assugah."

[identity profile] elynittria.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel kind of sorry for her, although I don't know her personally (or virtually personally, I suppose I should say). It's obvious that she's young and troubled, and she's really being dumped on (quite nastily at times) by people who are only peripherally affected by her actions. I'm definitely not saying that plagiarism is right or should be excused, but it would be nice if people were kinder to each other and tried to understand and forgive.
