5. Elementary School

We used to live across the street and slightly around a corner from a shopping mall. One night when I was about 8 years old, the McCrory's department store blew up. A gas explosion, ambulances, fire trucks followed, blaring and flashing. Neighbors gathered outside to watch. My sister, almost two years younger, slept through the whole thing.

Oh, wow, I remember. We'd just moved into the new house with the waist-high brick wall at the bottom of the stairs. Did you hit that?

I must have been about 5 I think. We were in my grandparant's summer cottage and there was a massive thunderstorm, lightning all the time and thunder as loud as I've ever heard. I was scared because of the noise, but my grandparents calmed me down by telling me that since we were close to the sea the lightening would strike there. That was when I found out that lightening is dangerous while the noise is not.
My little sister, only about 1 years old, slept through it all.
