17. Elementary School

Growing up I always felt I was a year or two behind my friends and classmates in social and sexual maturity. It was worst at slumber parties. I remember one sleepover in the second or third grade when we played "Truth or Dare" or some other of those thinly-disguised secret-spilling games, and the question came up as to which boy in class each of us had a crush on. Being a full-fledged nerd even then, my fantasies consisted entirely of people like Spock and McCoy, and I wasn't romantically interested in anyone in our class. Of course, when I said "no one," my friends wouldn't believe me. So I picked a boy, Muneer, whom I liked as a friend. For years afterwards -- until I got my first real crush and Muneer moved away -- my friends teased me about liking him, and my protests to the contrary only encouraged them. I'm sure to this day, wherever he is, he has no idea this was going on.

I can't remember a time where I didn't have a crush... And I'm quite serious, in fact. Even as a small child I did, I remember that very clearly. It's strange and nice that there can be such differences.

Tonight's memory:
When I was 9 or 10, I suddenly had the idea to grow my nails long and paint them. Turned out I can get very long nails without them going brittle or breaking. My mother asked me several times if there was someone I wanted to imitate or if someone else I knew had long nails and I always denied that. I still don't know where I got the idea from.

I can't remember a time where I didn't have a crush either -- it's just that most of the time they were (and are) for fictional people! I think I could just as easily divide my life into eras based on which character(s) I liked at the time, as on what was going on in the 'real world.'

And, hooray for creative self-expression, however strange it may seem to parents. How long did you manage to grow your nails?

I see :-) Well, my fictional crushes are later. Or, well, I had day-dreams about the people I had crushes on and those made them pretty fictional too *G* But purely fictional is later.

They can grow to about half an inch without trouble and if I'm careful even longer. I don't let them anymore because of the piano-playing, though.

Hm, yes, they do tap against the keys. What sort of music do you play?

Not so much the tapping, but they do risk getting caught between the keys and breaking and they limit the reach and mobility of the fingers.
I mainly play classical, but in the course of my education I'm supposed to be able to play for a choir or a solist as well.

Oh, stupid me, I didn't connect musicology and piano-/organ-playing!

And yes, I imagine long nails would affect reach and get caught. Mine have never been long enough to do anything but tap and distract.

It's not a connection that is always there, so fair enough.

Tapping is quite enough for some piano teachers. I found out early *G* I did play with my long nails as a child, untill I was around fifteen, I think, and then it became too much of a bother. I sometimes grow them if I have a slow period or in the summer holidays or something.

You, too? I thought that was just me!
