Discovery of the evening: Mary Shelley's Frankenhole.

I can never tell when I'm the last one to the table vs. when I'm sharing something cool with you. Probably usually somewhere in the middle. Anyhow, based on the three 10-minute episodes I just tried, the show seems to be a little like Robot Chicken in that it's stop-motion animation of pop culture characters, only it's less funny (sadface) and more Gothic (happyface; main character = Victor Frankenstein, supporting characters include Dracula and assorted vampires, the Mummy, the Wolfman, Dr. Jekyll, etc.). It's not unfunny -- there are lots of little moments that made me laugh, like having a dinosaur-to-oil acceleration machine, and Nosferatu "speaking" in orchestra-backed text slides, and calling Dr. Jekyll's potion the stupidest in monster history -- it's just that the ratio of funny to empty space or semi-offensive remarks could be better.

Still -- I am recommending it! Vampires and Dr. & Mrs. Frankenstein in something other than a Hollywood remake! Frankenstein's monster moaning about how no one can understand his centuries of pain! Random John Belushi watersports! Cameo by Ra! Polidori is apparently also in the show somewhere!

Episodes on Adult Swim's site; may be U.S. access only.

...Now to find a better movie for background entertainment than this one about attacks by giant sheep.

I just... don't know what I think about that show. I watched most of the first season, and I think maybe I just don't get it. But oh my god I cackle like an idiot whenever I see Nosferatu.

On the other hand, oh my god Moral Orel, the last series the creators did for Adult Swim, is absolutely brilliant. I saw the first season when it aired, and I was like, eh, but the second half of the second season and the third season, holy shit. Like, funny and depressing and thinky and really well-orchestrated.

And of course those are the seasons they didn't release on DVD.

Heh, I had a feeling you would know about this and have thoughts. Maybe my own opinion will mature when I've seen more episodes? Right now I'm still coasting on not having heard of it before and then finding Gothic stop-motion jollies.

Saw mention of Moral Orel in the Wikipedia article and hadn't heard of that either. Hmmmm. Will have to see if any of those eps are on adultswim.com or whatnot.
