Supposing a person were crazy and just came up with a multifandom space show/movie Club Vivid vid idea set to Nicki Minaj's "Starships," heard on the radio for the first time this week. Supposing this person wanted to compile a list of canons to put in this theoretical vid, choose key scenes from said canons, and find a few friends who own certain DVDs or know where to get downloads, all with the goal of finishing the vid by the April 29 deadline (gulp). Would you, the flist of this person, be willing to brainstorm ideas and/or suggest where to find missing source material?

Shows/movies I have thought of:
  • Star Trek TOS – shuttles, ship, Scotty yelling
  • [Star Trek TNG]
  • Star Trek DS9 – runabouts/Defiant, O'Brien fixing something
  • [Star Trek Voyager]
  • [Star Trek Enterprise?]
  • Star Trek Reboot – crew being wacky on the ship; beautiful shot coming out of warp into destruction
  • Star Wars – Han and Chewy on Millennium Falcon, Luke in gun tower, Luke et al in little raiders, C3P0/R2D2, Vader spinning
  • Odyssey 5 – shuttle
  • [Battlestar Galactica (2003)]* – Starbuck et al flying Vipers; Boomer et al flying bigger scout thing; crew building ship together
  • Firefly/Serenity
  • SGA – jumpers, city, F-302s, Daedalus
  • SG1?
  • [Farscape]*
  • Independence Day – Steve et al in planes, Steve & Dave in alien ship
  • [Doctor Who]* – TARDIS
  • [Babylon 5? I know nothing about it]
  • ETA: [Community] - ship-in-a-van and Abed-in-Dreamatorium
  • ETA: Galaxy Quest, duh!

[ ] = I don't own copies of the source material
*I think I know someone I could borrow discs from…?

To include: Engineers fixing stuff; space battles!; pilots being crazy and having fun; people getting thrown around bridges; making out/having sex during the part without much of a beat; come and get it; beautiful space shots; bursting out of water/atmosphere/nebula/whatever; soaring; captains/crew looking awed in drydock, caressing ships on deck; warping off into the sunset…

2001-- Dave in the pod, "Open the pod bay doors, Hal."
Galaxy Quest-- piloting the ship out of dock, the gel pod thing
Star Trek TOS movies-- SO MUCH starship porn

Galaxy Quest! Of course! I think I even have a crappy dub of that around here somewhere.
2001 I would need to track down.
Did Community ever have clips of Inspector Spacetime, or do Abed & Troy just talk about it?
Um, also would you be willing to lend me some discs (Doctor Who/Farscape, notably) should this idea get greenlighted by the Club Vivid team?

Wow, that is a great get up and dance song.

You mean you're asking for suggestions as to movies and shows? How about Star Trek: First Contact, the scene where Zefram Cochran makes the first successful warp-drive flight from Earth? As I recall, the music behind the scene is Magic Carpet Ride, but it's a really joyful moment, full of promise and possibilities.

There's also the giant geodesic construct from Contact, although I'm not sure that really qualifies as a "spaceship." *g*

We've seen teeny bits of Inspector Spacetime over Abed's shoulder, but nothing space-y. However, there was a scene with Abed's fantasy spaceship in the Dreamatorium a couple of weeks ago ("Contemporary Impressionism"), and there was also the Apollo 13 episode from last season.

(Also-- Apollo 13! And The Right Stuff!)

I don't own Farscape, but I can lend you some old-school Doctor Who DVDs and clean electronic copies of all of New Who. (And electronic versions of all of old-school, but some of that is ancient VHS rips and not very viddable.)

Ah, good suggestions both. Thank you! The only limitation on the suggestions I'm welcoming is that if I don't own it I'm going to have to find it fast, at the library or online somewhere, maybe even YouTube if the quality is high enough and the scene is good enough.

Oh right, Farscape was on loan from someone. I will pursue. New Who would be awesome, esp. Eleven.

Ah yes, Abed's ship! And the ship-in-a-van! I will also pursue.

We own Galaxy Quest! We also have SG1.

SGA - Laryn's ship?

You are the reason I didn't put SG1 in brackets, ha. I will take you up on the Galaxy Quest offer as well! Thank you!

Larrin's ship would work if there is someone looking very happy to be flying it.

Found a snippet of the 'First Contact' scene on YouTube, but sadly it ends right before they engage warp drive. I'm betting a public library would have it, though. It was really popular.

Also, if anyone's got The Fifth Element, there are a lot of ships in that, including the huge honking hotel/casino that orbits Phloston Paradise.

Heh, I have a copy of Close Encounters ... in NY. But the main characters aren't flying the ship, so that's OK.

Do you know X-Files well? What scene(s)/episode(s) would be good to try to watch? I didn't know they flew ships in that.

If you want wistful as well, there are some shots of Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and Toy Story 2 (which we have) that could work. There’s also the alien ship from Lilo & Stitch (which we also have).

X-Files and Close Encounters both, I was thinking about shots from the ground where the main characters are staring up at the ship (or the collection of lights meant to indicate the ship).

This sounds like such an amazing idea, so amazing, and you are so very much the person to pull it off.

There are these lists of fictional spacecrafts you've probably seen if that helps you in any way.

You could also try to work in something older, though I'm not sure if it would fit in with the rest of the canons; A Trip to the Moon is generally considered to be the first scifi movie made (from 1902) and recently became more popular probably because of the film Hugo, although it really has more of an emphasis on space and aliens than the actual spaceship.

Anyway, A+ idea, seriously <3

Thanks! Yeah, I think I'm going to stick to mostly modern stuff. I did see that Wiki list today, and one from another website, which was helpful filling in a couple of gaps, and I'm happy with the list of canons I've sketched out, which is a bit longer than the bulleted list above. The challenge now is to find a way to get BSG episodes and, secondarily, a few Farscapes. \o/

I am still looking for -- in order of importance --

Battlestar Galactica
Farscape
The Fifth Element
Community episode with the ship-that's-a-van
Spaceballs - found clip on YouTube
Any TNG ep that has ships firing at each other and stuff
Oh, didn't Muppet Babies do an episode in space? If we're talking about kids' stuff

Oh, man, if they do have something, I will totally go to their place and get it, wherever they are, unless they're planning on being nearby in the next few days.

They have a lot more movies than TV, although they do have the first season of the Muppet Show, which I believe would include Pigs In Space, if you're interested in that? I have most of Community and likely the ship-van ep (since I remember seeing it). I don't have any of the rest, though. I looked on my comms and did find some BSG on Mediafire, but we'd want to figure out which eps have happy flying scenes (I remember enough that what we want is Starbuck and the other pilots testing new ships or a successful rescue mission, but I don't remember details of where we'd find those! Do you have any BSG superfans on your flist?). I will look for the others tomorrow!

Did you find the rest of the kid movies (Wall-E and stuff like that)? Because B&E are likely to have that kind of thing, and probably the Fifth Element--I will call Heather tomorrow!

From: [identity profile] bironic.livejournal.com
I did find a bunch of stuff at the library and at deelaundry's, heh - I made another LJ post last evening, not sure if you saw it, with the missing stuff starred. Still interested in Community-with-not-spaceship (and if you know how to find the one from a few weeks ago where Abed was in a ship in the Dreamatorium, that'd be swell) and Fifth Element, so whatever H&B have, or whatever you have, would be so marvelous I cannot even express.

I've got the BSG pilot coming via Netflix. Other episodes I'd particularly like are:

2.9 Flight of the Phoenix (crew building the ship)
1.4 Act of Contrition (Starbuck crash)
2.8 Final Cut (Adama going "yes" on bridge, etc)
2.4 Resistance (Starbuck playing basketball)
1.10 Hand of God (pilots firing on Cylons)
1.12 Kobol's Last Gleaming, pt 1 (Starbuck in raider, crew crashing)

But I will take what I can get. :)

ETA: Any luck? Can/should I drop by tomorrow sometime for the Community disc?

If you weren't sticking to modern source, I'd add Fritz Lang & Thea von Harbou's "Woman in the Moon" for its seriously oldschool cool space ship (Wikipedia reports that it was designed by one of the fathers of rocketry, and that all blueprints of it were confiscated by the Gestapo). I guess these ideas should be cataloged under "some other time, some other vid" (probably a vid along the lines of Charmax's Space Girl).

Ugh ugh, I am telling you, people are going to do it before Club Vivid airs mine! But thank you for this shoutout!

I'm indeed planning to come to VVC - the only thing that would stop me is if my summer vacation plans-in-progress overlap with those dates - they are not entirely within my control as I hope to be traveling with a friend to her home country.

p.s. since now I am angsty all over again about the "save for VVC premiere" over the "release to the internets IMMEDIATELY" plan, any advice on whether that is the right decision would be welcome..........

YAY, I look so forward to seeing you there, hopefully!

And oh, if you can possibly stand it, save for VVC -- there is nothing quite so awesome as a new dance vid premiering at Club Vivid, on the two big screens, in the darkened room lit only by strings of lights and people wearing glowstick jewelry and watching vids and dancing! ♥
