(here via topaz_eyes) I agree with what you said here yet I was thrilled by the finale. (My expectations have been ground down over the years, though.) I liked it because House DID finally, permanently change. The execution was flawed but I thought the basic idea was perfect. When we were told Wilson had cancer my first thought was "if Wilson dies then House will have to change, because how he lives his life is so dependant upon Wilson's support." So the finale showed House facing the question of whether he could change, and he decided he could; more importantly, he can't go back. Back to being a selfish asshole sure, we've seen that every other time he "changed", but not completely the way he was before because this time it's literally not possible. It definitely needed more time, in fact the whole Wilson-has-cancer arc should have taken much longer than it did.
I like that the ending was left open and we can imagine what we want. For years now I've cared much more about the fandom than the actual show, and it's time - past time - it was over. David Shore has said he's open to making a House film and the idea horrifies me.
