Dear Festividder and anyone who might like to make a treat*:
*I would love a treat! You don't have to be an official Festivids participant to make treats, did you know? Rules and schedule at festivids.net.
A Simple Twist of Fate
I have watched this movie over and over through the years and would be thrilled to have any vid at all for it.
If you are looking for more detail: What gets me is the sincerity of the father/daughter bond, the way Steve Martin's character falls into miserly hermithood and climbs back up to become a loving family man, and the way Mathilda grows up and has to make this difficult choice—and that once she's made it, outside forces seem certain to force her to accept the alternative. I also love Gabriel Byrne's (and Laura Linney's) side of the story; he's a highly sympathetic (not to mention very pretty :) ) "villain," and even though we're rooting for Mathilda, it's hard to see him and his wife lose one of the few things that might have made him/them happy in life, even if it was his selfish mistake that lost him custody to begin with.
Take Shelter
This movie blew me away, if you'll excuse the pun. It's dark and eerie and filled with dread and it resonates with so many contemporary issues/fears of economic insecurity. It doesn't offer easy answers about whether Curtis's paranoia is a logical reaction to an uncertain world, the ripplings of mental illness, and/or something supernatural, yet it's not annoying in that ambiguity. I'd love to see any of that explored in a vid. Or the ups and downs of Curtis' relationships, even including or represented by the dog. Just, anything that embodies the terror and uncertainty Curtis struggles with, that makes use of all the looming supercells and the cracks of thunder and the signs-that-might-not-be-signs, that supremely creepy moment in the dream where all the furniture hovers midair...
This is the only source for which I have any sort of music ideas. Not binding in the least. Just throwing them out there: Neko Case's "Things That Scare Me" for its country feel and line about being haunted by the American Dream, and Rufus Wainwright's version of "Agnus Dei" for the epic, mourning tone.
I did a movie review here if you're interested.
What Maisie Knew
Some critics seem to have enjoyed pointing out that the idea that divorces and custody battles can harm children isn't new. I say, so what? This is a story about particular characters, and that makes all the difference. Maisie is adorable and my heart hurts for her every time an adult in her life makes a poor choice. I love her face and her sweetness and her quiet observation of those around her. I love the family she builds, or that is built around her, with Margo and Lincoln. Mm, Alexander Skarsgard. And I love that there's a note of hope at the end of what seemed destined to spiral into tragedy.
Stranger By the Lake/L'Inconnu du lac
A vid for this movie would be amazing. It's so intense—the intermingling of sex and death (so French, ha); the attraction and repulsion Franck feels toward Michel; the tension between physical and emotional connection embodied by Michel and Henri, respectively; the questions about why Franck moves in on Michel and protects him and pursues him despite the clear danger. The visual focus on the setting and the male bodies. You really can't go wrong, whatever angle you want to take.
Robot and Frank
I enjoyed this little movie, and I imagine a vid for it could go in several different directions. A fun romp with the "one last heist" plot? A buddy story about the bond that grows between Frank and the robot? A poignant exploration of the onset of dementia in one's father, and/or a parallel between Frank's and the robot's memory plot arcs? A highlight reel of the absurdities that feel all too imminent, like the transformation of a library into a social meeting space that doesn't need any books? Something else entirely? Can a vid even be made of a character that has no facial expressions?? Would it look like the robot is evil? (Wouldn't that be a fun inversion?!)
Dracula – NBC
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Thomas Kretschmann. Kink. The end.
Okay, not really the end. Those are just a few of my favorite things. There's also the wacko way the show reimagined the original story (steampunk corporate conspiracy drama with Dracula as Tesla? what?). And the Mina/Dracula relationship, with Jonathan falling further and further out of her interest. And the way Mina got to be a young woman pioneer in medicine, even if that was perhaps unrealistic for the time period. And the surprising amount of m/m and f/f content, given that the show aired on network television.
Did I mention the kink? Dracula tied to immovable objects and zapped with electricity, anyone?
So sad that this got canceled. So sad.
I don't know what your vid ideas or tastes might be, but feel free to cross this over with other Dracula adaptations or vampire media or whatnot.
Immortel: Ad Vitam
Thomas Kretschmann. Sigur Ros. A mysterious blue lady. A threesome with Horus. Assassin sharks in the plumbing. What a trippy, inventive and baffling movie. Anything you mold out of it will be hugged tight and exclaimed over.
& some general thoughts:
I like celebrating shows and movies that make me happy, but just as much I like queering texts, whether it's pairing characters who aren't paired in canon or inverting themes or highlighting kink or drawing attention to minor characters or changing the tone or telling a different story using the same footage. I like joyful and I like dark and I like sexy.
Really hope you aren't looking for specific song recommendations, heh. Whatever you choose will be the right music. If you're at sea, though, here's an attempt to describe my tastes: Folk from pretty much any country, rock, classic rock, classical, bluegrass, movie scores, Celtic, Balkan, world, choral, country where it intersects with folk and rock, a sliver of new age mostly involving piano or guitar, some pop, dance, hip hop, indie, once in a while a song from a musical, swing and big band... Hm. Not so fond of ska or reggae.
In case they're helpful in conveying preferences, my own vids are here at AO3/tagged on LJ, and some vid recs are here.
All that said: We've been matched because we both like something, so whatever you choose to do will be wonderful.
