2. Excerpt from a diary entry of mine, Kristallnacht anniversary, Nov. 2001 - sophomore year of college:
...I got a program and a candle and listened to some little poems. It seemed wrong to blow it out afterwards so I sat on a marble bench cross-legged with my styrofoam cup next to me, staring at the flame, trying to think somber thoughts about oppression, tragedy, ancestors and the Holocaust in general. Eventually the wind (it was very cold) blew it out. I wondered what kind of a God would let a memorial candle blow out? Then I thought, the same one who let it happen in the first place. Then I wondered maybe He was expecting me to do my job and put a hand to the side of the cup to protect the little flame but let it get blown out instead. Then I stopped thinking about it and came home and threw out the rest of the candle and washed my hands in hot water, because I don't even know if God exists anyway.
