To recap: I've been watching stuff with Zahn McClarnon in it, and I've got four fics in progress—one now complete—featuring different characters played by him.
Since the finished one is about Hanzee Dent from the second season of the Fargo TV show, we should talk about the second season of the Fargo TV show!
First:
CliffsNotes version: What you need to know if you'd like background for the fic
Spoilers for episodes 2x8 & 2x9. Mentions character death & sexually charged danger.
(1) All you need to know are these pictures, really. Or, here, I've made four gifs.
(2) Okay, actual context:
Hanzee Dent (Zahn McClarnon) is a hired gun for a mob family in Fargo in the '70s. He's sent to locate and kill a guy named Ed who has gone on the run with his wife, Peggy. Hanzee tracks down a friend of Peggy's, Constance (Elizabeth Marvel), in a hotel room they were supposed to share during a women's empowerment seminar. Constance, unfortunately written as a predatory lesbian, was hoping to seduce Peggy that night.
THE IMPORTANT THING is that I hadn't planned on writing any fic about Hanzee until he got all sexy-threatening in this scene.
He shows up in Constance's doorway; waits with her until Peggy calls so Constance can try to find out where she and Ed are hiding; listens in on the call with his arm around Constance and his head pressed to hers; and when Constance gets only a few sketchy details before Peggy hangs up, he strokes her hair, gathers a handful of it, leans in, and—cut to black. Hanzee reappears the next morning on his way to Ed and Peggy's lakeside cabin.
In the next episode, we learn that he strangled Constance and we see the room in complete disarray, with a chalk outline on the floor.
How did they get from A to B? They sat so close on the bed, and he was a professional killer while she was a beautician—how did the struggle get so out of hand? He had no apparent injuries. Did the sexy part of sexy-threatening turn into anything along the way?
Why are there zero fics on the AO3 exploring these questions??
So I wrote out a few different ways it could have gone, which eventually branched into five. Oh, and episode 9 featured a narrator, voiced by Martin Freeman doing a pompous academic accent (as described and directed by the showrunner), recounting events and pondering Hanzee's motivations. Using the narrator provided a nice structure for the fic.
And that is it! The story is in beta, and I'm making a few other tweaks, but it should be in postable shape soon. Then on to finishing one of the other three, I hope.

(Is the episode named after the Max Ernst character?)

Date: Sep. 5th, 2018 01:43 am (UTC)(It is! Reigning theory among reviewers is it refers to developments in Peggy's character, although there are other echoes I'm sure a rewatch will make clearer.)
(True story, at first I thought it referred to a rabbit Hanzee handled in an earlier episode. I could make an argument about how it foreshadowed Constance and, for a while, Ed and Peggy.)
