They're already sprinkling TV commercial breaks with holiday ads (first one spotted this season: October 30, two days earlier than last year), decking the malls with wreaths and ornaments, playing Christmas songs in stores, and sending red-ribboned flyers in the mail urging me to buy gift subscriptions. Arg. Until a few days ago, it wasn't even cold out. Remember the good old days when they held back the blitz until at least Thanksgiving?
But I am not writing to rant about capitalism run rampant or pervasive cultural assumptions about people's religions or the awful stereotypes in gift-giving ads. Instead, I would like to extend an invitation to all of you before these posts start popping up everywhere 'til they're as annoying as the commercials that tell you your family won't love you unless you buy them cell phones and diamonds. I've never done this before, but it sounds like a lot of fun, and the holidays/impending new year are a great excuse for some shameless sentimentality.
HOLIDAY CARDS
If you would like to get a holiday card in the mail sometime in December, drop a comment to this post (comments are screened) or email me (the address is in my profile) and let me know what your address is. Obviously you don't need to do this if I have your address already, unless you have moved. You can also say what name you want me to write to, be it your screen name/online persona or first name or what-have-you.
I'm very sensitive about privacy and am not going to abuse this information or go look up your address and find out Who You Really Are. Nevertheless, if you don't feel comfortable sharing your address but would still like a card, just say the word and I'll send you something by email.
Oh and also let me know what, if any, holiday(s) you are celebrating.
ETA: Will send anywhere in the world. Seriously. I may be mailing one to an LJer stationed at the South Pole.
There. I know it's only November, but (a) Hanukkah starts in a few weeks, and (b) this way, maybe you'll forget you signed up and the card will be a nice surprise.
