My friend K. and I had been sent to one of her neighbors' houses for something. A man opened the door when we rang the bell. He had an excitable yippy little white dog who barked and barked when he let us in to the tiny foyer. I think he and K. exchanged some parcel, maybe mail or food, and as we were leaving the dog jumped and bit the back of my right leg, on the calf. I rubbed it. The man scolded the dog for having jumped, held it back and asked me, concerned, if I'd been bitten. I said no, embarrassed, desperate to go. I knew about lying then, and infection, and rabies. As we were walking back to K.'s house it throbbed.

My classmate M and I were walking past the houses just next to the blocks where I lived. A large German Shepherd came out of one house, barking at us. It jumped up and stood with it's paws on my shoulders, barking like mad into my neck. I was sure I was going to die. At one time it jumped down and jumped M instead for a few seconds, then it came back. I was grateful when it attacked her instead.
I think it must have been about 10 minutes before the owner came out of the house and pulled the dog off us (or me mainly).
None of us were bitten and never really talked about it again. I am still afraid of dogs.

That must have been terrifying. It's terrifying even to read.

It really was. I jump if a dog barks since then - even small dogs. Or dogs I know are nice and sweet.
I'm glad I don't recall it as much anymore.

More Family Story Than Memory

... as it happened before I was born.

When my mother was fifteen, she and her family lived next door to Senator Muskie, Democrat for Maryland. When his dog had puppies, she and her sister and brother were invited over to look at the babies and pet them. The mommy dog was upstairs, and my mother picked up one of the newborn puppies. Just then, the mother dog came back, and immediately lunged for my mother's throat. She missed, biting my mother's cheek instead, and sending her to the hospital.

There's a little scar by the right side of my mother's mouth. It looks like a dimple. People wonder why none of us inherited it.

"...which is why we didn't vote for Sen. Muskie in the next November's election."

What sort of dog, incidentally, if you know?

Scary stuff. I suppose we all have one or more "almost" stories, as in things that almost happened to us or our parents or grandparents that would have resulted in our not existing at all.
