Lots of stuff is going on, and lots of that stuff is in limbo right now, so I'm stealing a few minutes to write down some of the fics and both of the vids I've enjoyed over the past couple of weeks. I hope they bring a little joy to some of you.
Vids:
- Très cool 30-second SGA opening credits done in the style of House by skroberts. Spot-on visual effects and choice of images for each of the actors.
- The Glass by thingswithwings. Meta-vid exploring cycles of homoerotic subtext in cult TV shows and movies over the last few decades.
Fic:
- Checkmate 'verse fics by beadattitude. In which John gets turned into a cat. I guess it isn't much of a compliment to say that this is far and away the best cat-transformation fic I've ever read and possibly ever will read, but it's true: this series is unbearably adorable, poignant and sharp, a character study of Sheppard through what changes and what remains the same during the month he's stuck in this animal form (letting himself be touched; "training" by playing fetch with Teyla; roughhousing with Ronon; trusting in others to keep him safe), a character study of Rodney as he ends up as Sheppard's caretaker, a portrait of the team as a true family, a portrait of a cat that's so detailed and realistic that it made me feel like I have one myself (only without all the sneezing), a snapshot of an alien culture where the inhabitants are smart and quirky and their customs beautiful... Oh, just go read it. It's like wrapping yourself up in a blanket. A little confusing to navigate the tags (advice: start at the bottom), but worth it. John/Rodney.
- On the opposite end of the spectrum, everything by Martha (saffronhouse). Gen, some SG-1 crossovers, some John/Rodney, one John/Rodney/Radek. Brilliantly scary stuff, where much of the horror is the horror of the unknown or the barely glimpsed. Every single story on that page is excellent. If you want to echo the order I went in, work your way up from the bottom (earliest).
- At The Hour When We Are Trembling by frostfire. SGA/SG-1 crossover, very light on the SG-1. Sheppard/Jackson Wraith-apocalypse!fic, not without its Sheppard/McKay undertones for OTPers. Long, but not in a boring way at all; rather, I was amazed at how thoroughly frostfire explored the aftermath of the attack as Sheppard and his newfound team struggled to survive, regroup and mount an offense of their own.
- In the super-guilty pleasures arena, Whipping Boy, and to a lesser extent, Splinters and Stones, by Kat Reitz & Perryvic. Old-school epic non-con hurt/comfort, John/Rodney/Carson (I know!), Kolya as the villain. The characterization gets out of whack sometimes and the language is sloppy in a lot of places and you can swim in the sentimentality, but whatever, it's indulgence!fic.
- Back on higher ground, Unsuffer Me by shaenie. Hot hot bondage/breathplay ficlet in which John learns something new about Rodney and about himself when they're captured and tied up offworld.
- four boots, five thousand two hundred and eighty feet by kormantic. Bodyswap John/Rodney. Hot, clever and with achingly well-voiced characters, as with all of kormantic's fics.
- copperbadge's 216 things about SGA, a highly critical but hilarious look at the series as he watched all four seasons in one go, with links at the end to what he swears are the only SGA fics he's going to write: I read and loved The Difference Engine, in which John is a robot and doesn't know it—the second-best AI fic I've read after Leah's "Muscle and Blood and Skin and Bones" remix/series—and Angles Thus and So, a look at McKay/Weir (with shades of Weir/Sheppard, Weir/McKay/Sheppard, and finally McKay/Sheppard) behind the scenes of the first four seasons.
- A couple of sizzling Rodney/Teyla snippets by apple_pi. (The second link also includes two John/Rodneys.)
- the one I love (whose name I won't let out) by siriaeve, who can always be trusted to make your heart melt. A sweet Rodney/Teyla story where Teyla listens to Rodney over the baby monitor he set up for her while he babysits, and falls a little in love with him.
- fics by Isis. I started with "Double Occupancy," a John-gets-transferred-into-Rodney's-brain story written before "Duet" aired. "Worst Case Scenario" and "Theory/Practice" were also great.
- Safekeeping by xparrot. Gen, team, John/Rodney friendship. Rodney suffers an allergy attack while the team is being kept prisoner on an alien world, and John (and Teyla and Ronon) fights to keep him alive. A wonderful look into the extended effects and aftereffects of a severe reaction, coupled with great team angst and loyalty.
- Girls of St. Mary's by toft-froggy. Nifty genderswap femslash AU where Meredith and Judy are in an English boarding school in the 50s. Warning: WIP.
- If We Make It Past The Judgement by sandrine. John/Todd. No, really. John feeds himself to Todd in small doses throughout his captivity to keep Todd on his feet.
- Stuck on You by darsynia. Short crack!fic in which Rodney and John are ice cubes. So gosh-darn adorable and clever, I want to hug it.
- Tanlines and Dogtags by Icarus. Sheppard/Lorne, sort of. Sheppard is gay, Lorne is not, Sheppard becomes obsessed with the idea when he finds out that Lorne paints and photographs male nudes, and they spend a day on the mainland. This Sheppard isn't my Sheppard (or one of my Sheppards, anyway), but it's still an interesting and memorable story.
- Which of these things doesn't belong? The Big Blue by triedunture, a.k.a. House/Wilson first time with a dildo. That's literally: it's their first time, and it's with a dildo. This is one of those stories where House and Wilson manage to still be House and Wilson when they get together, and accordingly, it takes them a while to get there. Quippy and sexy, with just a few rough spots/slips into purple prose.
- And, oh, what the heck, one more: Something Old, Something New by deelaundry. In which House is getting married, Wilson is hungover, and Amber has them both by the short hairs. Dee writes my favorite Amber of anyone so far. Wilson/Amber, offscreen House/unspecified.
With thanks to
catilinarian,
usomitai and
cathexys for pointing to some of these or to recs pages that led to some of these.
Also, question: Where is the Larrin fic? I think I've read one—maybe two—Larrin fics shortly after "Travelers" aired, and one of them may have been fake-Larrin/Rodney and John acting out Rodney's fantasy, but there have to be more. Right?
In non-ficly news, this is just cool: previews of a 3-D tour of human anatomy based on thousands of photographs of work done by a dedicated dissector in the 60s. Plus, the article quotes a doctor named Robert Chase.

77. David Hewlett is very good at falling down. Also, ranting. I would very much like to see him and Hugh Laurie do sketch comedy together. Lots of falling and ranting.
YAY!!!! DH + HL in sketch comedy together would be awesome.

Date: May. 19th, 2008 09:27 am (UTC)I have been bad and neglectful recently - most of this is due to the OMGBUSY and, uh, suddenly being overome by the urge to write SGA (even though I *swore* I wouldn't which, with hindsight, was a spectacularly silly thing to say if I really didn't want to write any).
I am officially caught up on canon...and yet, am writing somewhere in the middle of s2 *headdesk*.
I caught your health-related posts and sent mental goodwill, even if I didn't have the time/energy to send LJ-parcels. I'm glad you're feeling better!
I laughed myself sick at copperbadge's 216 things in between doing the ironing yesterday, so thanks for that link.
This is a flying!Comment brought to you by procrastination and the need to sit down and *comsume nourishment*.

Date: May. 19th, 2008 11:49 pm (UTC)I caught your post about SGA this morning and have bookmarked it for when I have time to see what you're up to in the story. It is intriiiguing.
Thanks for the good wishes too. I got a quite nondescript result report today and am hoping for more detail by the end of the week. All is well, though.

Date: May. 20th, 2008 01:43 pm (UTC)(This is probably a reflection of how the story's sitting in my head. Ooops).
Yay! *Raises glass* Health, happiness, fic, and time to write it! Unless that's asking a bit too much of the universe, in which case, Health and fic! - and thus happiness can take care of itself.
