Some fun for fic fans (and perhaps [livejournal.com profile] cryptictac especially): [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone's fannish Bulwer-Lytton contest of awful (made-up) first-liners. Deliberate badfic, poor punctuation, clichés and Mary Sues galore!

Goodbye lunches have been eaten, the car is packed, and I am moving to campus tomorrow -- see you on the other side....

Many exciting adventures have begun with a first line like that :-)

I hope the drive up is not adventurous in itself! But afterwards, excitement is welcome.

Man, that post has some *great* lines. ("Buffy Summers really was a lot like cookie dough: wet, sticky and impossible not to stay up all night eating." WTFWTFWTF)

The night before a new chapter! If I were you, I'd be having a hard time sleeping. :) I hope you don't have that particular affliction of mine, and that tomorrow runs well; let us know how it goes.

Ha. I liked the one that ended with "Wilson, who was an oncologist" too. And a bunch of the SGA ones made me *facepalm* in a fun sort of way.

I will probably have a hard time sleeping, though whether it's from the anticipation or the cold I've come down with may not be clear. Heh.

OMG what a fantastic link! I am looking forward to reading this. Hee.

And yay for moving to campus! Road trip! And ... moving to campus!

Cheers for an easy and quick trip and a good time getting settled.

*facepalm* I just realized I never wrote you back last week. Will do after a quick run to the grocery store.

Does it help if I say I forgot I sent you the email, so no worries? :)

Thanks -- all moved in now, and about to settle in for the night. Will post soon, when the last touches are... touched.

Thanks! I'm mostly settled in now. There is Internet, which compensates for the little things that are left to take care of.

Wow, good luck! And congratulations again - not just on getting into the programme, but on making the decision to take that step, and on getting out of an environment that wasn't giving you any room to breathe.

I hope this is fantastic for you. If I can swing it, I'd love to try and come to visit you in Cambridge in a few months' time.

Yay! If you're here over winter holidays, we should definitely coordinate; I might be back in NY then or traveling to who-knows-where to do thesis research.

And, thank you. *hug* It wasn't an easy choice, me being change-averse, but it was really time to do something, and I think this was a good path. Not the only, but one. Yes.

Oh good lord those lines. Oh good lord *diiiiiies*

Good luck! *waves madly* Hope it all goes well and we'll look forward to a full report!

Hi hi! I shall report soon, for sure. For now, more like "not sure whether to collapse onto little couch with Olympics on TV or collapse into bed with book and conk out."

Glad you enjoyed those lines! I need to check back and see what wonderful atrocities people have added since yesterday.

Those lines are utter crack unto themselves. Though I think I read the HP one where Percy thinks of cauldronOliver bottoms. XD

And good luck with your trip! See you when you get there!

Thanks! And now I am here! I know from your end it looks like I'm still living in your computer, but in reality this comment comes from a whoooole different state. :)

Hee, I thought you'd like those contest lines. I can never remember the term for when you replace a proper name with a description (epithet? epigraph? epi-something...), but when those kept popping up, I thought of you. Beyond the general clichés, that is. (Not that you use them, but that you poke fun at them!)

1. Good luck - hope it's all going well!

2. Random: I found them! They're more commonly called clione (or sea angels). I was reading an article about a Japanese museum of drift ice (as you do, and yes, apparently one really exists) and recognised the description. If you have NFI what I'm talking about, never mind XD

2. Ooh, that is wacky! It looks like a... fetus mixed with a beluga whale. Not at all like what I used to see in the pet stores.

1. Thanks! All moved in, met some people in the dorm, and will be off doing odds and ends tomorrow before burrowing in to do thesis ideas (I may call on you, if I'm not too embarrassed at how undeveloped everything is) and just chill for a few days. If I can remember how to do that.

Oooh, that gave me a really bad mental image, LOL. I think they're very cute... for slugs.

Please do - I can't promise to be helpful, but I am nosy *g*. Meanwhile, hope you enjoy slacking off!
