This post comes to you direct from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I have set up shop for the next 10-12 months in a lovely apartment that I will probably stop noticing beyond the area around my laptop as soon as schoolwork kicks in. It's nice to be in Boston again—I did my undergrad across the river lo these many years ago—and even better to be back in school, and even better than that to have been given the opportunity to come to this school in particular.

(I'm at MIT. I debated for months about what to reveal in public posts here on LJ, and I've finally decided to talk about the school but not my program, because it has to be one or the other but not both for privacy reasons, and I don't think I could hold myself back from talking about MIT, since I'm so curious about what it's really like and assume that some others are too, especially with SGA fanon so often proposing that McKay and/or Sheppard went here. See, I can say "here" now!)

So I'm on the lookout for The Real MIT as I go along. Thus far I've directly observed the local culture at a dorm dinner on Wednesday and Shabbat services tonight, and by riding a couple of campus shuttle buses, looking at posters and websites for goings-on, and keeping my eyes open as I walk around. I've seen posters in the student center for Harry Potter-themed dance parties (admission with MIT or Hogwarts ID), Star Trek movie screenings (I will probably go to see First Contact tomorrow), lawn meditation, and many solicitations for research study participants.

Today's highlight was a series of chalk sidewalk drawings advertising one of the undergrad dorms, called Random House. I think. Random something, and it didn't occur to me at the time that it was a publishing name. Anyway, every few squares along the street they had written or drawn something, such as a crossed-out equation subtitled "Non-standard Deviation," a little anime monster holding a pitchfork, "You don't have to take the bus to visit the coolest dorm on ---- Street!" next to a bus stop, and "Welcome to the other side of the tracks" after you crossed the railway. You could see people side-stepping and craning their necks to read them as they walked by.

People-wise, I'm surprised by the number of non-hard science and math majors around. Could be that they don't live in this dorm in representative percentages, they live here but didn't come to the social on Wednesday, or they haven't moved in yet. Could be that those areas are less popular than one would think. Will report back on this as the semester progresses. But I have met a Norwegian-via-Cambridge (UK this time) mathematician with the requisite long hair and awkward social skills, a pair of Latvian management majors, a Greek architecture and planning major, a couple of bioengineers, a technology and public policy guy, and an atmospheric sciences guy continuing from undergrad studies in math. Among others of the graduate population. Everybody has been very friendly and down-to-earth.

Man, I'd almost forgotten what it's like to be in a stimulating and diverse environment. And classes haven't even started yet.

1. Comfy comfy bed. It didn't start out that way, with a hard, creaky mattress and smoke-smelling sheets from my mother's basement, but with a new sheet set and mattress pad, and three pillows, because the room came with two surprise pillows in addition to the one I brought—I have never had three pillows, except maybe in extra-swanky hotels—and considering that the bed is double/full size instead of the typical twin (and there is a headboard! Never had one of those either), I expect that tonight will bring an excellent night's sleep.

2. Main room, including spiffy table and chairs from craigslist.

3. It may look crowded, but it doesn't feel that way inside. Part of the reason is the high ceilings. See the floor lamp in the far left corner in the last photo? Here is how high the window and walls go above it:

4. Also, when you're in the room, it looks like there's plenty of space in whatever direction you're facing. For example, the table and chairs as seen from the little couch:

5. Annnd, the laptop & desk. Where it all happens, as they say.

6. Lastly, the kitchenette. (I assume no one has interest in the bathroom.) For the last few days I'd been worried about where to put everything, but a couple of cabinet racks from Target cleared up a lot of space. I like when things are neat and organized. It helps in times of stress.

p.s. In a place of honor at the sink is Ed the scrubby octopus. (Mine is yellow.)

7. The city has looked gorgeous the last couple of days. Great weather, sunny and cool. Strange thing about the Charles River: looking straight down, it's brown and disgusting, and it's infamous around here for being filthy, but looking across on a bright day, it's a startling blue, complemented by the deep green trees lining the Esplanade, the brick red brownstones of the Back Bay, the shining skyscrapers of midtown, and the white and yellow sails of the boats gliding along the surface.

And that is pretty much the news for the week. Prep, goodbyes, moving, unpacking, shopping for the few remaining needed items, meeting/greeting, reading, sleeping and exploring. So far, I have successfully navigated:

  • one (1) dorm pizza social,
  • three (3) new local buses and shuttles,
  • two (2) floors of the main school library,
  • one (1) fully cooked dinner in my new kitchen,
  • two (2) trips to the supermarket,
  • the forty (40) or so TV channels we get on campus, and
  • one (1) Hillel Reform Friday night service followed by dinner, at which I met a decent enough guy, although he has a bit too much of the slacker mentality for me to fully respect him. Imagine! a sort of slacker at MIT.

Much more will come from Sunday onward as orientation activities kick in. Until then...

ETA: Oh, right. I'm going to be posting my new address under friends-lock at some point. If you would like it and you're not on my f-list, just ask!

Cool. There are a lot of Sloan students in my building, for whatever reason. (One guy joked that they sign up for this dorm so they can get used to nice loft apartments.)

I can't stop grinning because this is all so exciting! *is living vicariously* The place looks super cute and charming, like a little Lego dollhouse.

If I may be so snoopy, in photo #2, what is on the TV table in the little alcove right next to the sofa and the window?

It is my printer! Originally it was on my desk, but it felt a bit claustrophobic (I get that sense with objects/clutter but not with closed spaces), and that is not a space that should feel claustrophobic.

Dude, it looks amazing. A small space, maybe, but definitely one you've made your own. Plus OMG MIT! And various squees of that sort. I'm so proud of everything you've accomplished and how hard you've already been working at it!

That's what running around for a couple of weeks before moving will get ya. :) Having a minivan available for moving was great; I was able to pick up what I needed ahead of time, instead of trying to get it all here when I have to get around by foot, bus and subway.

And continuing good luck to you in your adventures!

Eeee your apartment! It's so... big! Compared to mine, *g*, or so it looks. And you have a couch! It looks very, very awesome. And you are sans roommate, yes?

So much luck in school, man. Have fun.

Yup, no roommate. Glorious.

Your apartment has many rooms, though, and more colors.

What a great apartment! It looks snug and cozy, but at the same time there are all these fascinating people ... oh, it's so amazing, and you're there! As you so totally deserve to be. *hugs*

It is exciting. But also nerve-wracking. Funny thing about being afraid everyone else at a school is more fit to be here even though you were accepted. At the orientation thing this morning, a career services guy asked, "How many of you think you're here because of a clerical error?" He waited to see how many hands went up, and then he said, "Okay. And the rest of you are lying."

Ha, thanks. I cheated and used one from a few weeks ago, but that's what it has looked like lately. Except today, as thunderstorms blow in.

I think it's been good so far. It takes oomph to get up and go to the mixer events, but afterwards I'm always glad I went.

Ha. My friend who worked at a book store stole got me that poster when the S2 DVDs came out. And the octopus! You press on his brain to squirt the soap and then he scrubs with his little bristly tentacles. Okay, arms. But whatever. (In the words of my former carpool, "Whatever. They're peanuts tentacles.")

Oooh, your place is looking sharp! And, hee, the House poster! That should be a conversation starter (what, no SGA poster??). ♥ I wish I could decorate that well~. And your dormmates sound awesome; I love that kind of environment, with so many kinds of people from all backgrounds (cultural and of knowledge).

I don't feel the MIT Mystique as strongly as I used to, since my college has a sort of partnership with it. I had friends who dated MIT boys/went to MIT frat parties (I never did that myself, but that's because I hate that kind of scene XD;), and I used to go there once a week or so, since the bus to Boston dropped us off in front of one of its bookstores. I even tried to take a class there once (with the Japanese historian John Dowen), but in the end dropped it because it ended at 10pm and the bus ride back didn't always show up on time. *_*

Despite that, it'd be cool to hear more insight "from the inside" on MIT. Loved the Harry Potter-themed parties (they never advertised anything that cool on my campus!). *grins*

Glad to provide! Tidbit: Today's orientation speeches featured references to Independence Day, Lord of the Rings and Iron Man. Only. And they couldn't get the laptop to display on the classroom screen at first. At a tech school. Awesome.

Do they have SGA posters? I guess they must. I got the House one from a friend who worked at a bookstore when the DVDs came out. Everyone looks a little airbrushed in it, but it's still great. And of course I've been trying to drop fannish hints into conversations when meeting people to see if anyone bites. So far I've had one House fan, and one semi-Trekkie and Whedonite.

I don't feel the MIT Mystique as strongly as I used to - Yeah, what you've said makes sense. By the end of the year, I'm hoping to be less in awe and more comfortable/expert on the place.

Still enjoying having this room to myself. With the kitchen and bathroom and everything, I don't even have to leave for a day or more if I don't want to. (Er, which could be dangerous when studying gets tough.) I feel that I should point out, though, that I didn't do all that much in terms of decorating in here. The room came with most of the furniture and curtains and the couch and things.

Your apartment/room looks pretty! Enjoy MIT; their campus is one of those places where it's so easy to feel one fits in, culturally speaking. I get that feeling a lot around here (Cambridge/Somerville), actually, and it never ceases to surprise me. Anyhow, welcome!

I skirted the edge of Somerville the other day getting to Target (bus stop was at Somerville Ave. and Prospect St.), and it looked like a pretty nice, vibrant culinary-type area in that square. Not so much in the few blocks towards Target, though.

Well, it didn't use to be called "Slummerville" for nothing. I live up closer to Davis Square, which is very much the happening place. (Poor Harvard, used to be The One...)

Ah, your apartment looks so nice and neat and well decorated. I'm so bad at getting wherever I live to look like that, but it can make such a difference with your general mood. Congrats on MIT. I hope it's a great year! And hey, I live about an hour from there (my rotating homes being Plymouth, Wellesley and Worcester) and go into Boston/Cambridge every once in a while to visit various friends at schools there, if you ever want to round up some House fans or something. I feel like we haven't talked as much as we did for a while in a long time, which is too bad. I've been less active on here. But oh well. Good luck with everything!
