It being the harvesty season for apples and pumpkins and pastrylicious things made with them, tonight there was a pie event in our building. We therefore interrupt this radio silence to bring you a poll of great importance.

[Poll #1275169]

I leave you with my favorite pie-eating media clip of all time, from A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Scene starts at 6:15, pie commences at 8:06. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfyGz21QkNA There's your whipped cream, [livejournal.com profile] euclase!

Is it very tasty? I have never had it.

WHAT. Remedy this! Peach is the only kind of fruit pie my mother will eat. And it's one of my favorites, too.

Mm, chocolate cream pie is delicious too. Why does LJ insist on not letting us edit polls? Woe. I love Boston cream pie and forgot to put it in.

Bironic, you must try peach pie! (Unless, of course, you hate peaches). It is ambrosial. I do not use that word lightly!

And Phinnia -- I very much approve of chocolate cream too -- especially Mud Pie!

Mmmmm oh no now I am hungry and I must go bake something

What'd you bake? What'd you bake?

I will now be sure to try peach pie whenever the opportunity first presents itself. I imagine it will be soft and sweet and delicious.

I decided to do a bit of schoolwork first... which ended up taking until 2 am! So I have put off the baking until tomorrow night; then I can eat pie *and* watch Pushing Daisies :D

I wish I had someone to make the pie *for* me!

Definitely a heathen, as I had to go look it up. (Did you know they're called "serviceberries" in the U.S.? Yeah, I hadn't heard of those either.) Is saskatoon pie tart? That could be tasty.

From: [identity profile] zulu.livejournal.com
I think I may've known that; the name's familiar, at least. Saskatoon pie is a wonderful blend of tart and sweet. And, around these 'ere parts, you can pick your own. (One for the bucket, two for the mouth. One for the bucket, three for the mouth...)

Oh man, I haven't had saskatoon pie in like, ten million years. Now that you've reminded me of it I want some. <3 Clearly I am a pie slut.

Ooh, like upside-down crumble. Nice. (I've had about enough cranberries to satisfy me this week, though, with a yummy sauce for a pork roast. ...Pork roast lasts a while when you're cooking for one.)

I don't think there's pie that I dislike. I mean, I hate blueberries but I still like blueberry pie. I dunno. Pie is just awesome. So I clicked several boxes for the second question. But my ZOMG VERY FAVORITE is coconut cream.

Ooh, cider pie. And swirly cheesecake. Cheesecake is awesome, but I do not tend to think of it as pie.

Is there a difference between coconut cream and coconut custard, besides the letters? Coconut is not my favorite, so I'm not too knowledgeable about these things.

Date: Oct. 9th, 2008 03:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] euclase.livejournal.com
Coconut cream = water and coconut infused into paste

Coconut custard = coconut + milk and eggs as traditional custard

AND OMG APPLE CIDER PIE IS SO GOOD.

I've got to confess, my favorite part of pie is the Reddi Wip.

My favorite pies tend to be the chocolate-based pies. But really I just like pie in general. Except for key lime. Or lemon chiffon. I feel strongly that citrus and pie shouldn't mix.

I feel the same way about nuts and chocolate. Both great on their own, but unpalatable together. (Unless you do not like citrus outside of pie either?)

Key lime is divine, IF you can get real Key lime pie, which is generally impossible unless you make it yourself.

Restaurants, for whatever reason, don't serve the genuine article.

The Real Thing is a creamy yellow-tan color, has a soft, smooth custard texture (no sugar-graininess at all), with the complex, distinctive flavor of actual Key lime juice -- which tastes very different than standard lime juice does. It's every bit as tart but far less harsh.

Can you tell this is dear to my native Floridian heart? If you want the recipe, PM me and I will happily give it to you; it's really very easy.

I think I have had real key lime pie once, or at least this instance was the closest I've come to it, at a steak house on Long Island -- the pie was indeed yellow instead of green, and had a milder flavor than the usual sharp WOW LIME LIME LIME but was still rich (it took three sittings to eat the slice they served).

I have never tasted many of these - we don't really have a pie culture here, other than the borrowed apple pie. As for sweet potato pie - while being one of my favorite dishes ever, I've never had it as a dessert.

I didn't really know about it at all until they served some last night. Is it not usually a dessert pie? I shall research.

Also, so so so sorry for posting this during Yom Kippur. That was just mean. I didn't realize until shortly after putting up the poll.

I think I read your post after I'd already finished fasting, but in any case, I wouldn't have minded :-) I watched Pushing Daisies, for god's sake. It's not like I could have had pie any more on my mind.

Shoo-fly pie and mincemeat pie. (Shoo-fly pie is a molasses-based Pennsylvania Dutch delicacy, which sounds awful but isn't. My mom had a wonderful recipe for it. Yum!)

Is mincemeat pie sweet or savory? It sounds intriguing.

And, oh, I remember shoo-fly pie! I've never had it, but I do remember being told about it, half-jokingly, during dinner at, indeed, an Amish family-style restaurant somewhere in Lancaster County (it's a well-known one, but I can't remember the name off the top of my head).

I'd say that it was savory. There's no meat in it (at least, not in the recipe my parents use): it's mostly raisins, currants, dried fruit, and spices. My mom always made a mincemeat pie for Thanksgiving, along with a pumpkin pie (which I never cared for) and an apple pie. My dad has kept up the tradition.
