15. Elementary School

My friend A.'s family was preparing for her first communion. In the foyer of their house, in front of the stairs and beside the door to the kitchen, I said something about how they were Christian. "Catholic," her mother snapped in correction (or at least it seemed snappy at the time). She had also once chastised me, not very kindly, for mispronouncing the word "christening" as "Christian-ing"; I'd only ever read it before, never heard it. Other than those few occasions, though, I remember her being very nice.

I hadn't consicously thought of it as the reverse of that classical story, but you are right, it is. The fact that a priest turned me away from God is not just ironic, it's rather tragic...
