SGA penultimate
Jan. 2nd, 2009 09:13 pmOMG, this episode is amazing. I'm sitting here grinning. WHY DID THEY WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT-TO-LAST EPISODE TO DO THIS???
Squee with me! Or disagree. But expect squee in return. Because while not perfect, this is an amazing leap for this show.
Running commentary:
- It's CSI: Stargate!
- Sheppard is totally the same broody AU detective fandom has made him. Especially Pru's.
- Human playing Wraith playing human. Punk human. Love it.
- p.s. Wraith have spiny spines.
- Zombies! Rolling Stones!
- It has fingerless gloves. Fingerless gloves.
- Wish Sheppard had solved more on his own instead of having SGC-Rodney swoop in to explicate. Still, I guess that'll let the second half move forward quickly.
- Sheppard's standoffish with the nurse he may or may not have slept with, and the first thing Rodney says about him when he lists his secrets is that Sheppard's never been married. HM.
- Todd the poet. Poor starved, crazy Todd. Hope he comes back to help Sheppard save the day.
- Ooh. And when Rodney said they tried everything, I bet they fed Todd someone too. They seem just edgy enough.
- So if Sheppard was involved with the female medic he went to rescue, then does that mean he was involved with the male captain or whoever it was he went to rescue in "our" reality? [ /queering ]
- And poor Rodney. I wonder what it was that changed his life so he ended up doing police work instead of physics. Must've been tough to meet his counterpart.
- Aw, Zelenka, where are your glasses?
- Hee! Rodney didn't make it to the Star Trek Experience before it closed, either.
- Sheppard set to Johnny Cash. It's like a fanvid, only canon.
- Yeah, definitely /queering, since the song is very much about wanting and not having a girl by his side.
- They so stole that ship/plane zooming-focusing move from Firefly.
- You can just hear John's "Oh, crap!" in his head as he leaps over his convertible when the punk Wraith starts firing.
- You killed John Sheppard! You bastards.
Oh, that was thoroughly enjoyable. I wish we'd had an episode like that every season. Even with the flash-and-freeze montage overkill.
I'm trying not to think about how depressing this John's life was after the dishonorable discharge. And Rodney's, for that matter. His was more understated, since it was John's episode, but they were both pretty miserable there. Atlantis must be gloomy in this reality, too, with these suits running it.
It's also a shame that this wasn't more of an AU, so that Teyla and Ronon could've been around.
p.s. People in street clothes and suits instead of uniforms! I did not mention because it was kind of a given from the trailer, but you know I love when that happens. Even the Wraith had sweaters and pants. I just love, love, love when fantastic canons like that can come a little bit closer to our ordinary lives.
*listens to "Solitary Man" a time or ten*

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 02:25 am (UTC)I'm liking it a lot, but I think they're actually going overboard on all the flashies.
And Rodney could show up any time now, KTHX.

When you have a sec, I'd like your opinion on a ficlet what I wrote. It's the latest post on my LJ ... no rush, I just want to make sure I don't screw things up. *g*

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 03:08 am (UTC)I am kind of amazed at how much like a fannish AU it was. The typical SG AUs seem to enjoy messing with people's personalities more than their situations, but this had everyone as themselves if slightly different.

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 03:10 am (UTC)At least now, if next week's is sucky or cliffhangery to prepare for the movies, I can pretend this was the finale.
But the real question I have for you is, will it motivate you to work more on Sheppard's 11? :D

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 03:42 am (UTC)*cough* yes *cough* I'd forgotten why I loved all these characters so much, but now I have been reminded! Oh, SGA. Plus, I've already put so much effort into it so far, it seems like a shame not to at least get a draft down.

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 03:54 am (UTC)Loved the use of "Solitary Man" with Sheppard. Like you, I was thinking that Sheppard doesn't need a girl by his side, but rather a certain astrophysicist (or the whole team).

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 04:00 am (UTC)How it fits into SGA-canon reality or *our* reality reality? Seemed like they were just another among the parallel worlds....
I wonder what watching that episode was like on cold medicine.

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 04:07 am (UTC)The former. There were a few points in the episode where I wondered whether the writers were setting things up for potential consequences in "our" Atlantis from events in this AU universe (such as Rodney's opening of the Rift and the Wraith signal's dissipation into said Rift).
I wonder what watching that episode was like on cold medicine.
Bizarre!

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 04:11 am (UTC)Did Rodney open the rift or did the Wraith's busted-up dart do it again by accident? I guess I didn't catch that part.

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 03:07 pm (UTC)The invention of cheese is really impressive.
That episode of SGA was the greatest thing since cheese!
It was CSI: Stargate. It was X-files. It was a comic book. It was so funny and so brilliant and I loved it. I loved Zelenka without his glasses and his hair more orderly.
I also loved Rodney's suit!
I'd kinda like to be in that reality for a little longer.

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 03:15 pm (UTC)Because, really. Who said "let's take this milk and heat it and stir it for a while until it curdles and then skim off the curdles and squeeze them together and put it on toast with some tomatoes"?

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2009 04:08 pm (UTC)I wish I'd recorded last night's ep. I kept getting distracted with the set design and the cinematography. Which is probably not something that gets said about Stargate very often.

Date: Jan. 6th, 2009 05:22 am (UTC)Oh, please don't stop with the queering! I love that idea. Love it, love it, love it! You are a very smart young woman.
Also, can I just say that John's shirt was just the right amount of too tight? Because among the many, many pretty things to admire in this ep, that sort of stood out for me. It's like the man can't help looking slutty in ANY universe, bless him.
