My fannish goals for the summer, which starts in about a week, are:

- Participate in Remix
- Participate in [livejournal.com profile] kink_bingo
- Learn to vid

Towards the third: I have not vidded before, so while I can find my way around more or less in a couple of video/audio editing programs, I don't know where to start on things like minimal memory/storage requirements, methods for storyboarding, how to make clips from DVDs, and how to set parameters for uploading to places like imeem. Therefore I'd like to make a vidding filter where I can ask questions to those of you who know how to do this. I am honored to have some fantastic vidders on my f-list, and I'd love to pick your brains.

Vidding is fun! But frustrating! But so much fun.

One thing you might want to read is this. Taught me everything I've learned about vidding. It won't make sense on the first read, or on the second, but as time goes by, it just starts making more and more sense, and you can do the things it suggests, and you're like, "Oh, of course, I see why it happens that way! A mystery why it wasn't obvious before."

Oh, sweet. That looks like about a year's worth of reading, but still a good reference guide.

I love that you gave us a 'none of the above' option. Vidding fascinates me, even more so since I helped make one ([livejournal.com profile] in_the_bottle did all the hard stuff, for she is awesome, and I flapped from the sidelines ;)) But basically, I tend to identify with Nanny Ogg when it comes to these things: (from Maskerade) ""Let me through, I'm a nosy person." It is surprising how often this works."

Looking forward to it!

I am slowly learning to be humble about how much I (don't) know. :) Glad you have you around!

I have vague plans once Big Bangs are done to write myself a summer curriculum, involving article writing, flute learning, website building and myriad other skills that I have always meant to acquire. There's no way I'm going to be able to fit it all in, but damn I'm going to have fun trying ;)

Since vidding isn't on my list, I shall sit here and grin and be fascinated :)

Good luck! Those things all sound like fun. So long as you will indeed have fun trying and not getting frustrated at how much is left.

There's a House/Wilson friendship vid I have wanted to make for about three years, so I'd really like to do that this summer. There's also an SGA gen Pegasus-POV vid I'd like to do when that's done. (Well, if it gets done, I guess.)

Hi! I vid on a completely different platform, but I could probably try to help out a bit and provide feedback. :)

Cool! Thank you.

What platform do you use? I don't know what I'll be using yet.

Linux. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL.

I only really use it because it would be more obnoxious to have to restart my computer every time I wanted to vid in Windows.

You vid on Linux? *is in awe* Even ripping from DVD's is giving me headaches, let alone trying to work with video editing programs. I might have to steal your brains friend you.

Arguably, I've never vidded on anything else, and I've only made two vids ever with two completely different vidding programs, so I don't know if I could really be useful about specific questions, but I'd love to help out if I can! :)

For ripping DVDs, I usually use dvd::rip (which is in the Ubuntu repositories) and I've heard good things about Handbrake (which has a convenient Ubuntu download).

Add me to the filter, but there's a lot of stuff you won't have to ask us about, because so many of these questions have been asked and answered. [livejournal.com profile] vidding's memories is a true treasure of knowledge, advice, and hints!

Another interesting vidding community is [livejournal.com profile] veni_vidi_vids, to see what other people are doing/discussing/reccing. Start poking around, there's lots to be read & digested! You can start by looking at your favorite vidders' memories, joined/watched communities, and tags.

vvv is more about reccing vids than making them, though, am I right?

Yes, but you can learn so much from recs-- what vids are noticed (and then you can watch them and try to understand why they got attention); what people compliment in a vid (which you can then decide if you want to try out the things they like or not); and most of all, those recs lead to good vids! And how better to learn to vid than by good example?

Very true. For now, I need to get the technical fundamentals down so I can start putting the pieces together, but that will be useful down the line when I'm ready to think again about higher-level stuff. :)

The technical side of vidding is way beyond me, and therefore of little interest. However, I do want to see the results of your efforts!

I was going to make a joke about only posting vids to the vid filter, but it really wasn't funny. So yes -- those will be out there, if and when they exist. :)

I answered "I think I can answer some of your questions," but I also would like to watch your learning process and learn from other people. :) If you're vidding on a mac, I can definitely help you with a bunch of stuff, especially the getting-started basics that some tutorials skip over. And plus I have a lot of tutorial recommendations. If you're vidding on a PC, I can offer significantly less wisdom.

Yesterday I was planning to use a Mac, but today I learned that the one I was going to use isn't available after all, so it'll almost certainly be a PC. Still, I'd love to see your tutorial recommendations when the time comes, and to hear your own sage advice, since as you know I have loved your Sheppard/knees OTP vid and The Glass.

ETA: really have not started research on this yet -- also just realized the starter pack was for vid-watching and not vid-making.

One day I will learn to do the five seconds of checking necessary to not say stupid things before posting comments.

ah, that's too bad! well, I will try to muster some sage advice anyhow. :)

I just assumed that you were going to watch the vids in the starter-pack in order to acquaint yourself with more vidding techniques. which is actually a big piece of my sage advice: watch a lot of vids. so you needn't feel silly about it!

Single most useful page I found when I began vidding: this resources page from Lim. It contains instructions for Mac, PC and Linux -- a simple explanation of what you need, and links to freeware, and so forth. It rocks. There are also a lot of vidding communities and I've found that the people on them are generally quite happy to answer questions!

Thank you. I've bookmarked that page -- looks great, thorough and readable. And of course advice from Lim should be taken to heart. And from you as well. :) I hope you'll be receptive to questions when/if I'm looking a more personal opinion than communities or primers might offer.

I showed your Lost vid to a couple of fannish but non-fandom classmates who were talking yesterday (again) about the show, and one wrote back to say it made her day brighter.

I don't watch vids much anymore, but I'm interested in seeing what you're up to. Will join in if I can but honestly, I think any vidding knowledge I used to have is the equivalent of knowing how to use a teletype machine XD
