Well, heck, how do you follow those two up?

25. Middle School

I had a desperate crush on J. for several years running. It started hard in the seventh grade. The summer afterwards, our family took a trip to Bermuda. In one tourist trap souvenir shop, I found a t-shirt J. owned -- his family had gone to the island too, or his parents had gone and brought him back the shirt -- not especially exciting, just white with a bright green/orange/blue box with dancing figures and the bold word BERMUDA. I asked my parents to buy it and didn’t tell anyone why I liked it. I wore it to school in the Fall and pretended to be surprised when J. said he had the same shirt, wanting him to think we thought in the same way. I even lied about it in my journal and wrote that I’d coincidentally picked out the shirt he owned.

I don’t think it was a coincidence that my journal-writing trailed off after that entry.

Maybe that will be our next interactive project: Explain a few things we have locked in our boxes of never-throw-aways.
