There was a movie rental place in a strip mall in our town before there were any Blockbusters or Hollywood Videos. It may have been called Universal Movies? I remember the whole place being dark. In front, there was a kids' room with a TV high in one corner and some bean bag chairs. Once, when my family went in to get a movie, Disney's Sleeping Beauty was playing in there -- the part where the witch becomes the dragon and is spewing fire at the prince's shield.

WTF?

I remember the day my grandmother got a copy of the Sleeping Beauty VCR tape. It wasn't store bought -- I think she must have taped it from one of the neighbors for us. And I remember being so thrilled, because it was in English, not dubbed. It might have even had subtitles. There were a few regular movies we always watched when we visited her: live action shorts of The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Peter and the Wolf, Bugs Bunny and the Great American Chase, and Disney's Sleeping Beauty. The latter was my favorite, pink and blue-splashed dressed floating in the air.

More proof that your grandmother is awesome.

Oh, I almost remember those dresses, now that you mention it. The fairies fight over it and it ends up half and half? Although I'm confused between that movie and Cinderella. My sister and I had a stuffed Gus the Mouse toy from that one.

Sleeping beauty was my favorite disney moving growing up.

But this reminds me of the first time I saw mary poppins, at the private school I attended only briefly. I still remember standing at the back of the classroom, by the door, watching the ending, every time I hear 'let's go fly a kite'. For some reason, at the time, it affected me very deeply and I nearly cried. dunno why.

Disney movies were great to grow up with. My favorite was The Jungle Book. I had the LP and used to play it on my own small plastic red-and-white record player all the time. I still know all the lyrics by heart.

My childhood was sadly low on Kipling, although we did at some point see The Jungle Book.

It's great, and a bit eerie, sometimes to see some of those cartoons after years and years and connect with that early self again through remembering certain moments, lines, textures...

the Disney version has very little to do with Kipling.
there IS an excellent animated version of "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" not done by Disney that is very loyal to the Kipling original. I don't know if it's on video but it should be.

I did catch a few minutes of that at some point on TV when I was young, but I don't remember much of it.

I do this awful thing where I fail to engage in conversation and instead just use your memoryfest as an excuse to reminisce and indulge in long bouts of writing...I wasn’t going to write this, but then since I you announced memoryfest, I convinced myself I could take the time to do so.

Wow, I'm not even sure I've ever seen Sleeping Beauty. I do remember one of the first movies I was ever taken to was Fantasia. I'm not sure I actually 'enjoyed' it - parts of it scared the hell out of me, especially those marching broomsticks and the hippos in tutus, where it felt like they were going to rush off the screen and trample you. AAAAGH! XD

We did watch the whole movie before and/or after catching that part in the store, but it's the only memory I have of that place. Strange. (I also once had a nightmare with that queen-dragon in kindergarten... I was an easily spooked kid.)

The endless magic broomstick drones were scary! True story. Never got the appeal of the hippos. Imagine seeing it in 3-D?
