Almost 700 words of a Battle entry and there's only just now a paragraph establishing the attraction.

Question: How would you describe the skin-baring portion of Kira's shirt? As in, right now the sentence says, "Kira stripped off her uniform top to reveal a sleeveless white undershirt with a band of …… beneath her collarbones." ETA: [livejournal.com profile] the_drifter to the rescue with "open weaving."

...Why yes, I'm filling my own prompt,* why do you ask?

Uh, latticework?

Hurrah! Finally a chance to use the term memesturbation!

*snort* Excellent.

All the House/SGA prompts ended up being mine, too -- good thing I put down some ideas that I liked!

"cutouts"?

I'm attempting to watch House. Can you tell? XD

Hm, possibly. On the cutouts, not the House-watching. I think I'm in the fannish minority for not having enjoyed the episode. We can talk later. :)

Still watching...

Edit: open-weaving is a good visual description :)

Ooh, nice. The sweater dress looks like someone took a pair of scissors to it, and the last dress accidentally fell out of the eighties, but the rest are very pretty.

Despite its relative accuracy, I feel like "macrame" probably lacks the sex appeal you're looking for.

Related question: Would Teyla use the term macramé?

Date: Jan. 27th, 2010 03:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] the-drifter.livejournal.com
Hahahah. Do you know how much I wish I could say yes to that question? Actually, Teyla's wardrobe makes me think the Athosians probably have twenty-four distinct terms for skin-baring cut-outs. But in your position, I'd probably go for "open weaving" or something like that.

Oh -- actually, that is simple and effective. Thanks!

And I'm grinning at the thought about Athosian vocabulary for weaving.

*scrunchy face of contemplation*

I think it's more open than mesh, but I might save that for second reference.

Also, hi! Have been enjoying your poetry and insane prose snippets.

Hi! Strangely, if I can make an lj post after a day's worth of reading, it feels like I have tangible evidence of my labor (and yet somehow the pages and pages of actual notes I take feel like nothing...).

I watched some DS9 for the first time early last year and somehow it struck me that the Star Trek vision of the future (in any of the series) seems to preclude patterns and prints. Kira's shirt stood out in that regard.

Ha. True. Among the Starfleet, Bajoran and Cardassian uniforms, anyway. Quark got to wear patterns, I think, and Garak the tailor, and various motley alien crews. I'm trying to remember what the cast wore in episodes where they were out of uniform, like on vacation on Risa. It may have been solid colors that were just different colors from their rank and division shoulder stripes.

Oh yes! I remember Quark and his gaudy get-ups (how could I forget?). We (the friend who introduced me to DS9 and I) wondered if it was a capitalistic thing, having patterns. But I haven't really seen enough to theorize, just idly speculate.

Now I am going to keep an eye and a few brain cells out for patterns and their relationship to morality and power, if Starfleet = plain and spies/barkeeps/thieves/terrorists/refugees/children = patterned.

LOL YES! De-pattern and conquer!

Yup, I agree with the_drifter. Openwork/cutwork. (I knew I kept my Reader's Digest guide to needlework handy for a reason. *g*)

And that's OK, I've been filling my own prompts too.

Cool, thanks. This fabric- and fashion-challenged writer appreciates the input!

This is the first time I've submitted prompts for a Battle. It feels like a deeper involvement.
