I registered for [livejournal.com profile] vividcon.... just in time for my vidding computer to break. I am bereft. Or in denial. Depends on the time of day.

Various other annoying and embarrassing things have happened in the last few days, but let us not dwell on them. Instead:

I

I went and saw The White Stripes: Under the Great Northern Lights on Friday. I didn't know much about the band other than I like a handful of their songs and think they're incredibly photogenic, in the way only a couple of people who look like they've been designed by Tim Burton could be. The film didn't provide much insight into their lives, but it offered a nice look at their performance style and formed a meta-concert as they traversed Canada on their Icky Thump tour. The most notable part for me was when Jack talked about how he loves working within punishing restrictions -- that, besides the formula they've laid out for themselves when they write songs, reworking the same elements for each album -- like writing a sestina, or any structured poem -- he tries to force himself to be in the moment in each performance, to make it more powerful, by creating handicaps for himself like only having one guitar pick and placing the organ far enough away from the mic that he has to move fast to get to it in time for solos.

I love that Jack appears perfectly comfortable doing things like performing in a kilt and singing mournful love songs originally written by women without changing the sex of the love interest, and that it all occurs without fanfare. I love watching Meg play the drums, and that when she isn't pounding away at them, she chooses to be quiet and is comfortable with that. While there've been far more illuminating rockumentaries, this did include a full performance of "Jolene" and introduced me to Black Jack Davy and White Moon. I don't know how I've missed "Black Jack Davy" in all these years of loving exactly that kind of folk music.

II

Joined Netflix on Saturday. Promptly watched Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog, a documentary called Seamless about young fashion designers competing for a Vogue/CFDA fellowship, Stephen Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience with *cough* Sasha Grey, a bunch of 30 Rock episodes, and a random German gay prison semi-porno love story.

III

Went to brunch with a Meetup.com group of women around my age, who turned out to be great. The poached eggs and smoked salmon were tasty, too.

IV (sort of)

One of these days I need to redo that top five sexy celebrities thing. I can't believe I left out Mick Jagger.

p.s. What's up with the LJ back/next/track bars?

I haven't been to VVC before, no. It sounds like an intense weekend; I'm looking forward to it now that I've done some vidding and will be able to start -- start! -- absorbing some advice and inspiration. There are some people who've registered who are LJ friends, LJ acquaintances, and vidding inspirations whom it'll be wonderful to meet and who hopefully won't be too cliquey.

Well, I think a lot of people will know each other from previous years? So there's that. But I found my roommates to be entirely welcoming, and people were totally cool about going to dinner together and joining in on conversations, and the response to my vid was fantastic, and the panels on Learning Stuff were pitched at a great level--mostly just over my head, where I could learn snippets and be inspired, but definitely not understand everything, so that I could also remain in awe.

Have you heard the Dylan version of Black Jack Davy? I love it.

I went straight to this YouTube version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFPqVF5a_Ck) after seeing the movie, listened, and promptly favorited it. I love Dylan. And folk music. And minor chords and tragic tales. And am passingly familiar with Steeleye Span, who, I learned, had sung it earlier (though not in this arrangement). I have no idea how this song has escaped my notice!

Yes you are. In my head when I pulled up the Google page, you were saying, Eugh, more feminine men!

You can have the Stottlemeyers and Hilaries, and I'll take the Jaggers and Rhys-Meyerses.

I'm sure we can work out a time-share schedule.

...Along with good portion of our f-lists.

I get the feeling RSL would start complaining about how much work it is to be passed around from person to person, and we'd have to find one place for him to laze around while we did all the switching-of-places (...etc.).

Maybe he could nap during the some of the shifts? I'm sure there are fans who'd be happy just to watch him sleep.

Eugh, more feminine men!

Huh?

Jagger's feminine?

I always just thought he was talented and had great presence but was unfortunately, as we say in the South, ugly as homemade sin (bless his heart). I'm aware that this view is not shared by his legions of fans, but. I don't ... I just ... Jagger? *shakes head*

He's all yours, hon.

I see where his looks aren't universally attractive -- meanwhile, Keith Richards doesn't do a thing for me -- I will take him happily! :)

As for Mick looking feminine, I was referring more to his willowy, pouty-lipped, wide-eyed earlier days -- stuff like this (http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:18K5TbKB4Jg9lM:http://991.com/newGallery/Mick-Jagger-Performance-433866.jpg) or this (http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:IyP3x6_YR249UM:http://www.hollywoodtoday.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/sir-mick-jagger.jpg). Mm.

for what it's worth, keith doesn't ring any bells for me, either.

i always figured that the big attraction with jagger was the talent, presence, strut -- he's compelling to watch, even if i'm not personally attracted to him. i really do get where the attraction comes from, but i must tease.

and i will now open self up for mockery by admitting one other bless-his-heart-he's-homely fellow i do find attractive.

tom petty.

Vividcon! One of my dream cons to visit! Have a great time. ;D Any chances you'll get a new vidding computer before that?

I'm hoping this one can be fixed. If not, yeah, I'll invest in a new one. This one was refurbished from a machine we already had, so it was on borrowed time anyway. I guess. It was working fine right up until it decided to make screechy alarm sounds instead of booting up.

Screechy alarm sounds? Huh! When I came back from England my computer did the exact same thing-- I took it back to the store from whence it came, and they knew at once what it was, humidity eating away at the chips or whatnot. Perhaps it's the same with yours? A simple cleaning (within 24 hours, in my case) did the job.

I do hope you manage to get a way to vid soon, because maybe then you'll contribute a vid to the con? And I'd love to see what you'd cook up for the event. :3

Humidity is near the top of my suspects list; it rained for four days straight here and is now in the 60s, I have no dehumidifier in this apartment, and the screeching started on day two of the storm. Well, it screeched on day two of the storm when I tried to boot up, but it had been several days since I'd last tried, when it was fine. Hm -- and I had the windows open on day one to get paint fumes out, and the DVD player hasn't been working well since then, either.

Anyway. Thanks for the tip and boost! I do want to finish one of my vids for the con -- the due date is, I think, in May -- and beyond that, I want to rescue all the WsIP I have on there!

Ha! The one where the love interest is supposed to be American but is actually English? And also a pretty terrible actor?
