Dear friends: Some stuff is going on right now, and the good/neutral things are only most of the time balancing out the bad thing. Therefore I am taking license today to complain, even if about far less significant matters.

Unpopular fannish opinions, edition the first

Inception

  1. Eames / Tom Hardy is not attractive. I'm sorry; I said it. He looks like my cousin. My cousin who is not attractive.

  2. Arthur / Joseph Gordon-Levitt needs another decade before he can be called handsome. (That doesn't mean I don't like watching him in stuff. Especially when he is dancing or faking orgasms.)

  3. Eames/Arthur in and of itself does nothing for me. The subtext for that pairing in the movie was far less interesting than for pairings like Cobb/Saito, Eames/Yusuf, Arthur/Cobb, Cobb/Ariadne, dream!Mal/Ariadne, Arthur/Ariadne, Saito/Fischer, and Saito/Fischer Sr. (And why is Nash fic not popular?) There have been many fantastic Arthur/Eames stories, but almost as many of them would have worked just as well if one or both had been substituted with other characters. Looking at the piles and piles and piles of Eames/Arthur fic really hammers home how the rare pair 'shippers must have felt when John/Rodney dominated SGA fandom.

  4. It is really weird how a majority of fics took the characters in the movie and turned them into a permanent team, no questions asked. From the sound of things, they work with Eames occasionally; Yusuf came special-order for the gig; Saito had one specific job he wanted to accomplish; Ariadne has to finish school; and see next item re: Cobb. Yes, there are ways to pull some of them together believably. Ways to bring them all together again. But it takes explanation. They're not all just hanging out in a warehouse somewhere taking odd jobs. However, as [livejournal.com profile] roga said when trying to explain to me why so many people glomped on to this movie, fandom does love its teams.

  5. Also? [SPOILER WARNING] IMO, Cobb is in a limbo coma at the end of the movie. Not frolicking around with his kids, taking extraction jobs when he feels like it. That ending was too perfect to have been real. (Why was Miles waiting in L.A.? Why did everything go exactly right? Why were his kids exactly where and how he'd expected them to be? Etc.) I think I've seen three stories where he's been in the hospital and someone has gone to try to rescue him.

Well. I suppose that's the same thing that happened [SPOILER WARNING FOR SGA S5] after "Vegas," when most everyone fanwanked away the death scene so they could write post-ep stories.

House

  1. There are convincing arguments to be made for House/Cuddy and House/Wilson. Fandom means never having to choose. I find these vicious 'ship wars baffling.
  2. I like Thirteen.
  3. …I should probably catch up on the last 3 episodes and get the scoop from [livejournal.com profile] deelaundry on the lastest fandom idiocy so I can better comment.

SGA

  1. I love secessionist!Sheppard as much as the next person, but I don't think canon John is attached to the Pegasus galaxy & its issues & even Atlantis so much as he is attached to Teyla and Ronon specifically.
  2. Katie/Rodney: adorable.
  3. Keller/Rodney: terrible for each other, but not evil.
  4. John/Rodney: not automatically MFEO.

*grump the second*

Things I wish I never had to read again:

  • "amber liquid"
  • "feet planted"/"feet flat on the mattress"
  • "bemused" when you mean "amused"
  • "woah"
  • "yea" for "yeah"
  • silicon vs. silicone
  • vice vs. vise
  • …Crap, I had a whole list of these but I seem to have misplaced it.

Anyway. Feel free to grump with me or offer happy things. I'll be computer-bound most of the weekend. Except tonight, when I am going to see The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, because I need deserve a movie after this week.

Eh, and if I could find the whole list, I'm sure I've done some of them too. It's a critical mass kind of thing.

(And if you have used them, a. most of them are personal pet peeves and not technically incorrect, and b. good writing like yours is worth an occasional twitch. :) )

What you said!

I find myself glad I'm not really in House fandom, per se -- I watch the show, I enjoy it, sometimes I read the odd bit of fic or talk about it with someone I already know, but I'm not connected with the fandom qua fandom, and I suspect I am glad of that at this moment in time.

Re: Katie/Rodney, I do absolutely adore the moment when he swoops her into his arms and kisses her (so it's Cadman driving the bus, big deal; the kiss is still hot like burning, if you ask me.) And there are things I like about Rodney/Keller. Ultimately I'm not sure they're going to wind up wanting the same things -- and I admit to a soft spot for McShep which is approximately eleven billion miles wide -- but of course that doesn't make her (or them) evil. *bafflement*

I love Rodney and Katie's complete inability to communicate with each other, when it's so clear they both want their relationship to work. It's too bad how it turned out, although it was inevitable, with their differences in interests and temperaments.

As for Rodney/Jennifer, I tend to look for in-canon explanations for what goes on (is that the Holmesian explanation?), but I lost the ability to justify their relationship when the show producers talked about Rodney being their self-insert and Jennifer being "the girl," when there was so little foundation for it on screen. Especially when Jennifer/Ronon would have had such chemistry!

Re: House fandom, I have enjoyed much better mental health since I cut house_wilson and the house newsletter from my flist a couple of years back. But [livejournal.com profile] deelaundry has taken upon herself the sacred duty of informing me of much of the wackiness still going on in those quarters, and it sounds like it's getting worse with each passing season. No, thank you!

...which strangely does not stop me from enjoying the hell out of fics that assumes Cobb is awake ...and Arthur/Eames. And it's ok if you don't like Tom Hardy BB, I shall love him enough for the both of us :P

The bemused/amused thing irritates me, too. I've taken to explaining bemused to people by saying "it's the real word for o.O or 'what is this I don't even...' and that seems to help, but it's slow getting the word out to everyone.

I'm also worried about the prevalence of "it's/its" confusion, considering I'm seeing it in professional publications.

How about seeing it in forms and notes sent home by elementary and secondary school teachers? My most recent favorite was an it's/its confusion... on an English interim report card. :-\ (My daughter circled the mistake before turning the report card back in. Maybe the English department will get a clue?)

I took [livejournal.com profile] house_wilson off my reading list and life has been much happier. Though my own unhappiness with the show is no more rational than the shipping wars, because I do realize that the show is called House, not Wilson. But I don't even need more Wilson (in fact, less comic-relief!Wilson would be lovely) - I'd be happy with two scenes an episode as long as there was just a smidgen of character development for him, so I can be inspired and finish the last entry on the damn table...

The more I watch the more I lean towards ronon/Rodney, despite the fact that I think shepperd would be fun to write, and of course there are tons of pairing options.

GOD YES BEMUSED.

Fandom, you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

By the way, this might amuse you (or it might bemuse you, but those would be TWO DIFFERENT REACTIONS): at the recent convention I attended, there was a badfic panel that was entirely about funny misspellings and misuse of words. One of the things that came up was "angle" for "angel" - "sad angles" made an appearance in one fic, and in another, the world was under threat from "rouge angles".

There was also a room full of slash prompts (left on post-its on the walls), and one of them, after that panel, was "Sad Angle/Rouge Angle".

... And I wrote a story for it. I'm torn between feeling proud and vaguely ashamed.
