I heard this song "Somebody That I Used To Know" by a band called Gotye on the radio a couple of times in the last month and really liked it, especially the semi-emo opening verses (e.g. "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness"). The singers have nice voices, and the sound is part indie, part pop, and part retro, with a xylophone and a distinct Police-era Sting vibe in the chorus. So I hooked up my phone to play it on YouTube through the car stereo while I drove over to a couple of friends' houses this weekend. And it was only after I parked this afternoon and looked down at the phone while the video was still playing that I discovered that Gotye and guest vocalist Kimbra are really good-looking. Wow. I can't stop watching it now, especially after Gotye's face gets painted.

In other news, I had an unexpectedly fun day over at my friend A's place -- not unexpected because she and her husband are always interesting and entertaining, but unexpected because we weren't planning to get together -- during which they introduced me to some more Finnish cinema of the Aki Kaurismäki a.k.a. depressing and dryly humorous variety and we ate a lot of homemade food and took a walk over to the independent bookstore Politics and Prose which somehow I had never been to, and also I got a haircut last week so my hair is excellently short again, and also I received a tiny adorable plastic trophy for being "Hardest Working Judge" in a local fangirl mystery-ingredient cooking competition that was held on four successive weekends ending last Saturday! Yay.

ETA: Oh, dude, Gotye is playing at the 9:30 Club in two weeks. Anyone in?? ETA 2: Sold out. Oh well.

He has a fascinating set of music videos up on YouTube (she said, sounding like an expert despite only having browsed during the last half an hour) -- Studio Ghibli style, stop motion claymation, stop motion live action, the sort of animation whose name I don't know but that they used in movies like Waltz with Bashir, all sorts of impressive stuff that holds your attention even when the songs are less catchy...

Heh. And my car doesn't have half the modern connections like USB or Bluetooth. Still: pretty cool! Esp compared to my last one, when state of the art was a built-in cassette player.

The painting is really neat, no? And hee, I thought of you when I was posting about how handsome I find Gotye, because he was possibly too feminine for you with that hair. Kimbra has great hair, doesn't she?

Yes, definitely too femme for my tastes, although he's certainly 'pretty' I suppose! I have been hearing an awful lot about Goyte lately - although it seems that almost everything I know about popular music I get from fandom. LOL.

The partner-in-crime looks very vaguely like Gotye. In a slightly older sort of way.

The rest of his stuff is interesting. Some of it is just way too pop and not in a good way. But there's a lot of it that's more experimental and a good kind of strange. He's really worth checking out.

I found out about the show a few days ago, too. It must've sold out really fast. WRNR is giving away tickets, if you can get that in DC (It's Annapolis-based, so you might actually get it clearer than I do).

Hm, good tip. I think I don't like the rest of his songs enough to work to track down tickets, though. I will make do with watching the video until something else catches the attention.
