Brief/surfacey but fun article in the journal Nature about time travel in pop culture: Physics: The time lord and fellow travelers

ETA: Duh, and last night I went to see The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with live score. Much fun. I didn't know much about it other than iconic images and that I ought to have seen it years ago, and that it probably resembled in some preceding way The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Now I can say deep things like German Expressionism is indeed a fascinating if short-lived (but long-influential) genre and Conrad Veidt was super sexy when he was young. (Says the person who loves the same look in aesthetic descendents such as Edward Scissorhands and The Crow.) Ha, and that Kink Bingo-wise, Caligare totally did sleepy/unconscious things to Cesare. Reading some Wikipedia articles revealed what Batman fans probably already knew: that Caligari was the inspiration for Tim Burton's Penguin and that Veidt's role in the later film The Man Who Laughs was the inspiration for the Joker.

I have felt, for the first time in a long while, well-dressed this week. That is in part because now that I am getting paid again, I've been able to budget for, and told myself it was okay to buy, some much-needed new clothes. That's instead of putting it off until I've lost the few pounds I regained during the moving process after working to lose them in the spring after switching birth control brands. That was a lot of "after"s; sorry. Point is, I have come into possession of the first double-breasted pea coat that has ever looked good on me, a miracle pair of neither "relaxed" (I have no hips and no butt) nor "skinny" (calves make them look and feel ridiculous) but slim-fit black pants, boots with two zippers on them, some sweaters, a tartanesque dress, a hat and three bras (instead of one) that do a proper job of supporting my 34Fs. Because it finally went through this thick skull that it is worth feeling good about this body now even if in a few months I am able to go down a cup size or two. Also on Monday I got a months-overdue haircut.

So. Pulling myself back together.

And about to stop shopping as soon as I find one more pair of shoes I can walk around all day in that aren't sneakers, because living in Boston involves quite a bit of walking.

.

Okay, need to peel a dozen eggs to make those spider deviled eggs for Halloween tomorrow. Do you who celebrate have any costume plans?

Are these too sneaker-like for walking?

Ariat Terrain boots

I have a pair, and they are incredibly sturdy and comfortable. They're $90 at Shoebuy, but for some reason I couldn't get an image of the shoes to come up. If they're not what you're looking for, you might check out other Ariat shoes -- they have a pretty good rep. :D

They do look nice and sturdy. I'm looking for something more suitable to wear during the week to work, though (office job, business casual).

My regular wardrobe happens to include a lot of 60s looking clothes so I usually combine certain items that I normally would only wear separately and together they make a pretty striking hippie chick costume.
Deviled eggs, nom.
I saw Caligari and I think every serious film geek should see it.

Do the extra zippers give you extra powers? Nice hat! I love flat-heeled boots for walking around in. If you've come into a paycheck, I bought mine from Thom Brown on Newbury Street: http://www.thombrown.com/women/Women-Boots-Flats/TMB02985-Troopa-Brown#.UnJ4BWlD5w8 (A different color, though.) They're not sneakers, but they're pretty comfortable, especially with thick winter socks. (A while back I started paying attention to the footwear on the T, and it's surprising how few high heels you see compared to how ubiquitous they are on women in TV and in movies. My theory is that the higher number of women you see wearing high heels outside the T are mostly folks who drive or folks who, like my coworker, only changed into heels once they got to work.)

I've been trying to be more fashionable this year, and I succeeded as long as the weather was warm (skirts are so easy to fit), but my shopping trip this week was one of the more miserable because unfortunately I have a pretty high hip:waist ratio, and apparently pants that fit that (much less look any good with that) are just not in right now. I'm glad you found pants that fit. It's gotten to the point where I'm tempted find a garter belt and really thick stockings and continue to wear short skirts year round.

I'm trying to find a string of LED lights to give myself a halo, but otherwise I'm focused on helping my small roommates. :)
