1. This has to be a joke, right? Somerville Designers Are Building Giant 'MegaBots' With Missile-Launching Capabilities

(p.s. It doesn't seem to be a joke)

2. Graahhhr. After all that, I forgot to nominate Vampire Academy for [livejournal.com profile] festivids. Well, I guess the fact that no one else did either means there wouldn't have been a request for it anyway.

3. Just returned from Atul Gawande book reading. ♥ Was not super impressed by The Checklist -- could have been an essay rather than a book -- but so far this new one seems important, difficult, clear, moving, illuminating, conversation-starting. *Eddie Izzard voice* Any many other adjectives as well.

4. It's almost the weekend. So looking forward to sleeeep. And more than likely some autumnal domesticity/nesting.

I'm only on the first chapter and already it reads more like Complications than The Checklist, which is to say, incredibly promising.

Well, or maybe more like Better. TBD based on how complex his arguments turn out to be.

Yanno, I'm not sure I'm any fonder of hipsters building weapons than I am of militia members building them. At least the MegaBots seem to be intended for exhibition purposes only? At least for now?

I haven't checked out their Kickstarter page, if it exists yet, so I'm not sure what the ultimate goal is, but it seemed more like "boys with toys" in the form of a giant paintball gun combined with the suit from Aliens. I guess I assumed DARPA can already do ten times better than this if the US military wanted a giant mecha weapon. :)

I just read a Mother Jones piece about Gawande's new book, and promptly added it to my Amazon wish list; I have enjoyed his work before, and this book sounds particularly relevant and meaningful to me.

For sure. The genius and necessity of his subject choice is that it touches all of us, right? Though some more often and more immediately.

I assumed it was you who nominated it. Someone else out there must have been interested enough to nominate it, so that's a very good sign.
