Having lost track of most of the plots...

Halfway through season 7 of The Vampire Diaries on Netflix and mostly reacting with "WTF."

For example: Evil lesbian vampires drug and chain a main character from the ceiling, torture her and... demand modern fashion advice?

It's just such a mix of good and bad. Absolutely cringeworthy aspects, such as:

• One of two black characters is literally mute.
• A woman, finally fed up with being in a string of abusive relationships (which two dudes had to stage an intervention to make her admit), defies her boyfriend by killing... herself.
• (On a lighter note:) Eight million bad English accents.

At the same time:

• They are juuuuuuust on the cusp of a poly relationship, where a girl is carrying one man's twins by another woman and going to pregnancy classes with him while having a boyfriend of her own and getting pissed at judgy townspeople who don't understand "21st century" relationships.
• Time loop episode!
• Sick of Enzo and the way the show no-homo'd his relationship with Damon a few seasons back, and yet now we get Matt taunting him with the line "Damon didn't want you" right before he says "Lily didn't want you" and, by paralleling them, making the erotic undertones of the former relationship kind of sort of almost explicit.

I dunnnoooooo.

Wow...

I used to watch Vampire Diaries and enjoyed the first couple seasons but bailed a few years back. I have no idea what's going on now!

I barely know what's going on now and I've seen all the seasons! They progress plots so quickly (a strength, IMO), and entangle relationships so thoroughly, that it's really hard to remember from season to season what happened and who's got baggage with whom and who's been killed or reanimated or turned into a werewolf or whatever.
