Festivids assignments

Every year I'm surprised by the disconnect between the Festivids nominations list and people's requests, i.e. how many sources on the list aren't requested by anybody, suggesting that people nominate a non-trivial number of things they want to vid rather than want to receive.

I get it, probably because several of you have explained it to me in the past. Someone might be inspired when they see a source on the nominations list and end up requesting it when they wouldn't have otherwise, providing an opportunity for the nominator to make the vid they want. Maybe the nominator is more likely to make the vid when it's a gift for someone and/or comes with a prompt attached and/or has a deadline and/or has a built-in audience.

It's just not how I tend to operate. I nominate sources I want to receive vids for, and I offer sources from the list of what other people have nominated. So it feels odd, even though it has happened several years running, to see such a small percentage of my offers show up in people's Dear Festividder letters.

Anyway. The AO3 roundup after signups closed revealed that only two of the sources I offered were actual possibilities, and it was easy to gauge how much more likely one was than the other. So the assignment, when it arrived today, was not a surprise.

I like the source, obviously, and I spent some time last night poking around for music ideas just in case, so I think it will be fine. At least I shouldn't have to default like I was worried about!

And I hope whomever got me as their match is excited by at least one of the prompts. I am definitely excited to receive a vid for any of those movies or for the book.

Re nominating things we want to vid, I also nominate sources I'm dithering about! I nominated a couple of sources that I thought I might ask for, but then I chose other fandoms at the last minute - and two of the fandoms I chose at the last minute were things other people nominated.

That said, I have totally nominated things hoping someone would ask for them - I nominated @dog_rates this year but I hoped someone else would ask for it and I didn't want to vid it.

Ah, right, yes. I am guilty of one of those this round as well.

Ditto the above sentiment - and it seems to have worked, yeah? Though it remains to be seen whether it gets matched or made as a treat.

I'm not a Festivids participant but for Yuletide I usually nominate things I want to request and hope to find things I can offer from the nominated fandoms, so I hear you. I hope you enjoy your Festivids and have fun making your vid! :D

Oh, thanks! I got over the first hurdle, which was song choice, which based on past communication you might not have raised your hand to help with :), but that is a generous offer that I very well may take you up on later!

I had the opposite problem this year! Everything I requested this year were things I nominated, but only two of things were offered (by one person for each of those fandoms). Usually I do request at least one or two things other people nominated, and others end up offering those fandoms.

I was surprised at how many people I could have matched to this year, though. Usually it's between 3-7 and I think it was at least 20 this year!

The switch to AO3 was interesting in part for seeing that table of number of requests vs. offers for each source. If I hadn't been traveling, I probably would have been over on that page a lot studying the dynamics!

fwiw, when I did Festivids, I definitely requested things I hadn't nominated because I was inspired by the list.
