Watching

Did you know there is a Drunk History episode where Adam Beach, Q'orianka Kilcher and Zahn McClarnon do the reenactment/lip synching? It's in the Alcatraz takeover segment of "National Parks," season 6 episode 2. A good time. You can tell that they, along with Dallas Goldtooth as John Trudell, had fun with the swearing and flamboyance. I'd only ever seen Zahn do this brand of comedy before when he played an exaggeratedly effeminate gay stylist in Repo Chick, which evoked a similar mix of delight and uncertainty about whether busting one stereotype mitigates the perpetuation of another.

Wikipedia just informed me that the previous episode focuses on the Frankenstein creation story, with two Woods as two Shelleys: Evan Rachel Wood as Mary and Elijah Wood as Percy. Also Will Ferrell as the creature and Seth Rogen as Frankenstein. This should be interesting.

I'd never seen a whole episode of Drunk History before and hadn't realized how often they cast well-known actors in the reenactment roles. Now I see that is half their schtick.

Vidding

I spent part of last weekend working on the sports movie vid, only to confirm that there's too much left to do before the fanworks deadline. "Do I really want to stress myself out trying to make the other four minutes of a four-and-a-half-minute multivid in a week and a half?" I asked, remembering how I ran on adrenaline and meal delivery to knock out "Starships!" in that amount of time and how it took a solid month to edit "The Greatest" last spring followed by about six months of recovery.

Although it's disappointing not to bring a premiere to the con, I'd rather take my time with this one, especially since the whole idea was to play around with the editing. At this point, or at least in this case, I'd rather the process be fun than the vid be done for the dance party—a definite change from past practice.

Anyway, fresh off that decision on Saturday, I shut down the computer and went to the store and ran into scribe and feedingonwind, which never happens. They also mentioned the vid deadline crunch. So you can imagine my amusement and horror when scribe said she and fiercynn were trying to motivate themselves by saying, "Starships was made in a week!"

(Good luck, friends! Please only use that vidding story as a model if you need encouragement to work like a dog!)

Writing

Just as well, perhaps, since someone's prompts at nonconathon captured my dirtybadwrong imagination and I started two stories! 2,700 words on one so far and a couple hundred on the other. Pretty sure the first one will get done. Yay. It's been five months since I added substantive material to a story and eight since I posted a fic. This serves as an excuse for skimping on work all week. Gotta ride the writing wave when it comes.

The PWP includes about 200 words of math, which makes me laugh.

There is nobody in either fic by this name, but I titled the Word doc "jonathon nonconathon" because I couldn't stop seeing the name in the 'fest title.

Ha. I wasn't planning to submit a fanworks vid, because Ian rejected my original dance song idea and since I'm just a supporting member I don't feel that strong an urge to premiere a vid. But... with the extension to the due date for Sparkle Motion vids, I just submitted a new Sparkle Motion vidsong yesterday, approval pending. And next weekend I'm hosting a NYC metro area group vidding day, so maybe a last minute dance vid will happen and extend the streak of Israeli dance vids to four years.

I can't, I am firmly in denial that I am working on that vid. (Even though I already have a still-growing list of 31 fandoms that have Jews dancing and did not appear in Might Lead to Mixed Dancing.)

And, thanks! I've asked my high-and-low-culture college friend & his bf who live on the Upper East Side if they'd be interested in joining. Made me wonder if you all would hit it off. Going the same evening as you would be fun, but a Tuesday is hard, plus I'm a plebe who wouldn't be able to hold up my end of the conversation. :)

I won't pretend my Sparkle Motion vid is a work of genius, but I have a full timeline and more than a week until the deadline, so I'm confident that I can get it to "good enough for the purpose." My time and energy is now going to the tricky Fanworks panel premiere I'm working on; I'm almost halfway done and I think I can get it finished and decent before June 23 at the current pace. But I'm also forcing myself to stop vidding after a few hours every night because I don't want to burn out.

I mistakenly thought Sparkle Motion vids were due next Wednesday, hence the "week and a half" comment. Whoops. Not that a few days would have changed my mind. Anyway, as they always said about Club Vivid, lots of people will be inebriated, so vid polish is not strictly necessary, heh.

Ahahaha, well, we have like half an extremely rough draft and a month to go, so we're not quite in Starships territory yet...I'll keep in mind the full context of that motivation, though. :D

When I took my introductory Ojibwe class last spring, Adam Beach called in one evening and spent the whole evening talking to us about what Ojibwe means to him, and chatting to us *in* Ojibwe, and also talking about how he learns other Native languages for movies. It was super neat.

Did you have favorite things he said about language acquisition (and probably its inextricable ties to culture) for roles?

He said that he asks his teachers to teach him the most complicated phrase they can to begin with, so that he can learn the particular musicality of each nation's language. And once he has that down - the rhythm, the pacing, the lilt, the tone - he actually learns the words of the script.

I remember a bunch of people being into the show around the time Lin-Manuel Miranda guest-starred, and he served as the intoxicated narrator/expert, so I must have assumed that's the role in which all the big names got placed!
