Happy Hanukkah!
Dec. 4th, 2007 07:24 pmOr as
roga charmingly put it, Ch/H/a/nn/n/u/k/kk/a/h, because who knows what the "correct" transliteration is?
Our house smells of potatoes and oil, I'm full of eggy/oniony/potato-y latkes and applesauce, the candles are ready for lighting, and there are presents waiting on the dining room table. It's warm inside, and dark and windy outside.
You've all probably read these, but here are some lovely Hanukkah fics from years past (since I haven't seen any yet this year....):

Date: Dec. 5th, 2007 01:23 am (UTC)Looking at those fic titles made me wonder, has it ever been explained on House of which religion Cuddy's actually supposed to be? Just a little thing I now really want to know. and since I watched s1 and 2 as a marathon about a year ago (yay for holiday break! A good time to watch a few seasons of a TV show) some details didn't stick in my brain.
See, the feeling of contentment during this time of year is so connected with food! We were making cookies on Saturday, and even though the part me and my brother actually do something in only lasted for about 10 minutes (mom does the hard work of making the dough), I was in a good mood for the rest of the day

Yup, Cuddy's Jewish. She's looked for matches on J-Date (a website for Jewish singles), she had a menorah in her office last year, and I'm sure House has made religious references/jokes at her expense that I'm forgetting, possibly including when she was looking for sperm donors. Plus -- not that it proves anything -- Lisa Edelstein's Jewish.

Date: Dec. 5th, 2007 01:44 am (UTC)I wish I could be in America for a Thanksgiving, just for the turkey! I'll make it some day..*dreams*
If there is one thing I love about December, it's the MASSIVE amount of family time. And all the lights everywhere..wish everybody would just keep those up until like late February/Early March, when it starts to get brighter again..

Date: Dec. 5th, 2007 02:25 am (UTC)It does indeed. I almost included that one, but it feels (to me, anyway) more like a year-round Jewish holiday fic than a Hanukkah one. There should be a recs list for that. Then we could include Corgigirl's "Pesach," and Nightdog's Rosh Hashanah fic, and...

... isn't it? *g*

Oh, right! Sorry. Candles all by his lonesome, I guess -- although NYC is pretty much the best place to be in the U.S. for a Jewish holiday. :)

Date: Dec. 5th, 2007 05:42 am (UTC)Reading your description of latkes has made my mouth water. They sound a lot like blini, which I think I'll try to persuade my brother to make this Christmas. (Last time we got together at my Dad's house, he cooked a big Polish meal complete with pierogi and blini. Yum!)

Date: Dec. 5th, 2007 12:42 pm (UTC)Mmm, those look tasty. Latkes are closer to hash browns than pancakes, at least the way we make them (grated potato, chopped onion, salt and pepper, a little baking powder, and bread crumbs and egg to hold it together) but I can see the similarity. And blintzes, potato or cheese -- those were the next recipe in the cookbook.
