11. College

A week or two into my freshman year at school, I was walking down the street after buying a book at Barnes and Noble when I heard someone calling, "Miss!" I turned around to find a man in his thirties jogging towards me. Black hair, skin a trifle darker than a late-summer New England tan would produce, seemed non-threatening enough, though I get nervous at any sudden contact, whether with an earnest-looking stranger or an unexpected encounter with a friend, so my heart was pounding.

"Excuse me," he said. "I saw you in the bookstore and followed you out here. Is your name -- ?" (I've forgotten the name itself, but it wasn't mine.)

I shook my head.

"Did you go to school in Austria?"

I shook my head again. "No..."

"Oh, because you look exactly like a woman I knew, and I thought you were her."

I guess we chit-chatted for a little while longer there on the sidewalk before he went back inside and I continued on to the dorm, though I don't know what about or for how long.

It's a strange thing to learn there's at least one other person out there who looks like you enough that an acquaintance might confuse you. I asked myself on the walk back: Is there a woman in Austria wandering around with my face?

This one's a bit different because I'm trying to convey the memory of a person rather than an event.

When I was 16:
I had a boyfriend, L. He was very tall, 1.92 metres (I don't know what that is in feet and inches) and had waist-long blond hair. Very blond. And a sweet face with freckles and a sweet smell. The way his hair waved from side to side when he walked was unique and I would recognise it to this day.

I hope he is happy.

A meters/feet conversion calculator says it's about 6'3", so yeah, pretty tall. He sounds cool.

I love doing character sketches of real people. In fact I was thinking about suggesting it for another month only there would be privacy issues.

Hm, very blond and tall and freckled-sweet... has that influenced your affinity for Draco at all?

He was cool. One of the nicest guys I've known. I regularly think of trying to find him just to say hi.

Heh, he's definitely one of my personal Draco's - I have a few in my past. Others include my father (for a somewhat Lucius-y personality at times and white hair till he was 25), Morten (had no respect for anyone and that white hair as well - he sadly died in a car-crash when he was 19), R. (my personal bully at school, I hated him but he was good-looking as hell and I had a bit of a crush on him despite hating him).
I think you can see where all that leads *G* No wonder I like the brat.

Yep, I think that pretty much encapsulates the Lucius/Hermione and Lucius/Draco/Hermione stories I've read. (Which doubtless means I need to read more/better ones. :) )

he sadly died in a car-crash when he was 19

That's horrible! I'm so sorry.

When I figured that connection out, it certainly made a lot more sense that I like Draco/Hermione and Draco/Harry so much... That and my own tendency to end up in very conflict-filled relationships *G*

His death was horrible. It's been many years now, so he's become a fond memory again, but then it was awful. He was a friend and a very special person.

Hello, I'm presuming this is Stephanie?

If so, yay!

If not, sorry for the randomness :)
