11. College

A week or two into my freshman year at school, I was walking down the street after buying a book at Barnes and Noble when I heard someone calling, "Miss!" I turned around to find a man in his thirties jogging towards me. Black hair, skin a trifle darker than a late-summer New England tan would produce, seemed non-threatening enough, though I get nervous at any sudden contact, whether with an earnest-looking stranger or an unexpected encounter with a friend, so my heart was pounding.

"Excuse me," he said. "I saw you in the bookstore and followed you out here. Is your name -- ?" (I've forgotten the name itself, but it wasn't mine.)

I shook my head.

"Did you go to school in Austria?"

I shook my head again. "No..."

"Oh, because you look exactly like a woman I knew, and I thought you were her."

I guess we chit-chatted for a little while longer there on the sidewalk before he went back inside and I continued on to the dorm, though I don't know what about or for how long.

It's a strange thing to learn there's at least one other person out there who looks like you enough that an acquaintance might confuse you. I asked myself on the walk back: Is there a woman in Austria wandering around with my face?
